13-year-old Logan Kavaluskis from Michigan always dreamed of owning a dog. However, because his dad Joe was allergic, it prevented their family from ever being able to bring one into the home.
Sadly, Joe struggled with a disease for nine years that eventually took his life. But five days after the family’s loss Logan received a final gift from his father that he wasn’t expecting. The boy’s emotional reaction was caught on film and it has the internet needing tissues too!
Logan was only a toddler when he began expressing interest in wanting a dog. He’d even carry around a stuffed Boston terrier, hoping that one day they’d adopt a pet.
As we know though, sometimes we can’t always give our children what they want. Joe’s allergies stood in the way of being able to fulfill his son’s desire for a dog. Yet, he always tried to make his kids happy.
According to Logan, his dad was adventurous and loved to keep them on their toes with surprises.
The boy told InsideEdition.com:
“He always had these cool things planned out and he would try to keep them secrets until we were there. He turned everything into a good, happy thing.”
On top of being an incredible husband and father, Joe was also suffering from cancer. Then one day, he learned his time was coming to an end after a nine-year battle.
Before Joe departed the world he spoke to his wife Melanie about an idea he had.
The father of two requested that after he passed away, to please adopt a puppy. Melanie shared his words with Inside Edition, saying:
“He had planned it out with me before he had passed away. He said, ‘Make sure to get Logan a dog, ’cause I know that will bring him a lot of comfort.'”
Joe’s long battle ended January 8th of 2020. Less than a week later, Logan turned 13-years-old and his mom put together a special surprise for him. She said they were going to take a ride to help a cousin pick up his new puppy.
Logan was completely unaware that everyone was hiding a secret.
Together they went and picked up the new puppy, a Boston terrier/French bulldog mixture. On their way home, Logan’s cousin told him he could hold the dog for the remainder of the drive.
A camera was rolling as the cousin passed the sweet pooch over to Logan. He then revealed the tear-jerking surprise. He said:
“It’s from your dad. It’s your dog.”
Logan’s instantly shocked by the news. At first, he asks, “Really?” unsure if he’s hearing it right.
The boy’s eyes well up with tears and he asks again, “Really?” That’s when Logan’s cousin says, “I swear to god. Dad wanted you to have a puppy.”
It’s a moment that’s hitting the internet straight in the heart.
Logan’s formed a close friendship with his new pup, who he named Indy.
Melanie explained to InsideEdition.com that Joe’s surprise ended up being a “comfort” for the rest of their family too. She said:
“It kinda just all played out perfectly … like Joe orchestrated it from above is kinda how I feel about it.”
