A cleft lip is a birth defect that some babies experience due to not forming properly in the womb. It’s a pretty common defect that can be taken care of when the baby is still young, but multiple surgeries might be needed. For children with a cleft lip, the most important thing for them to know is that looking a little different is totally normal and that every human being has their differences. Different is beautiful, and we should embrace our uniqueness.
So when a dad from Michigan whose son has a cleft lip stumbled across a dog at a local shelter who also had a cleft lip, he knew that his son would be a perfect match for the dog.
Not only that, but the dog would be a great reminder that everyone has their differences – but these differences are what make us beautiful. The dad wasted no time in adopting the dog, and the little boy fell in love with his new furry friend from the moment he met him.
Two-year-old Bentley Boyers is currently having surgeries to help heal his cleft lip, and the brave little guy has had two already!
And Bentley’s dad, Brandon, found the perfect way to reward his son for getting through his operations. It was by total accident that Brandon stumbled across a puppy with a cleft lip whilst visiting a local animal shelter. The dad was actually there to look at some chickens he was thinking about adopting when he came across the two-month-old puppy. He knew instantly that he would have to take him home.
Speaking to Click on Detroit, Bentley’s mother, Ashley Boyers, said, “He (Brandon) facetimed me and said ‘I think there’s a puppy here with a cleft lip-‘ and I said, ‘get her, we need her.'”
Apparently, Bentley had gone through a tough start to his life, and he struggled to eat at first because of his lip.
Ashley explained how she and Brandon had to hold Bentley’s lip closed in order for him to eat – and Bentley has come such a long way from that point.
Brandon knew that the sweet puppy would serve as a reminder to Bentley that he wasn’t alone, and from the minute the two met, they got on like a house on fire.
“To see him have something in common with a puppy means a lot because he can grow up and understand that he and his puppy both have something that they can share in common,” Ashley said.
“It’s so hard to put into words how meaningful this adoption is to all of us so we are going to let the pictures speak for themselves.
