Suzi the boxer might be a dog, but she loves cats.
It’s probably because she has spent most of her life surrounded by them. Suzi’s owner, Kelly Hartman, rescues kittens and cats, and Suzi has always been along for the ride. Some dogs don’t like cats, but Suzi loves them. Kelly said:
“When she sees the cat carrier she knows exactly what it is. The kittens typically are pretty comfortable with her within 24 hours, but sometimes it takes longer. I have had kittens that like her more than they like me!”
While the kittens are there, Suzi takes care of them like they are her puppies.
She cleans them, protects them, and even keeps them warm at night by letting them sleep with her. When the kittens would get adopted, Suzi would become extremely depressed. Kelly knew she needed a cat that could stay with them. She adopted Kushi, a cat with one eye.
She had taken Kushi in as a rescue.
One of his eyes was really large and infected at the time. She ended up helping him get the treatment he needed, but along the way, she fell in love with the cat. She decided to keep him. Kelly said:
“I was so sure I would never be a foster failure. Eventually, I found someone who helped me get Kushi the treatment he needed for his eye, and she also convinced me that he was already home, that he would be the one who got away if I let him go, and she was right. He’s my perfect cat.”
Kushi and Suzi became good friends, and Kushi even took lessons from Suzi and helped care for the foster kittens that came into her home.
He would also grow sad when they had to leave. Again, their owner decided to find one they could keep. She adopted a blind cat named Sunny. She knew Sunny would fit in well with the other pets and wasn’t sure if anyone else would adopt her since she is blind. Kelly said:
“We knew Sunny, who is totally blind, would be a good fit, and I was interested in taking on a special needs cat. Sunny Marz acts like the kittens’ best friend. I always say that she is like the cool, older cousin.”
All of the animals get along great and work together with Kelly to help her care for the foster kittens that come to her home.
Each one has a role. She said:
“Kushi is always grooming and caring for the kittens. He gets very upset if he hears them crying. He just wants everyone to be happy! They have always been very accepting of the animals that I bring in. Things are so quiet without kittens running around and I think they get a bit bored when it’s just us!”
Maybe that means that Kelly will have to find another cat to keep at home with her?
After all, now that Sunny is getting lonely, she will have to find him a companion, too. It doesn’t seem like Kushi or Suzi will mind. As far as they are concerned, the more the merrier.
Kelly is doing a great thing, and her love for these little kittens is so strong that it rubbed off on her other pets.
Now, they all enjoy looking after homeless kittens and nurturing them until they can find their forever homes. The other animals will probably always be sad when the kittens have to go to their new homes, but at least they are working hard to help them. These odd animal couples are doing amazing things together.
