Everyone knows that dogs are heroes. They are selfless and often willing to put themselves in harm’s way to save someone else. One heroic border collie recently showed this when he raced into the path of an oncoming vehicle to save his brother, a chihuahua.

Video footage from the owner’s home showed her backing up in a van, not realizing that her dog was behind it. Meanwhile, the poor chihuahua had no idea that it was in the path of the car.

As the car backed up — quick enough to kill the little dog — a second dog barreled over from the yard.

It scooped the chihuahua up in its mouth, knocking it out of the way just in time.

“I saw something in my mirror,” said the owner. “First i thought i had crushed my dog.” [sic]

She quickly pulled back into the driveway and got out of her car, making sure that both of her dogs were all right.

Thankfully, neither one of them was hurt, thanks to the brave actions of the border collie looking out for his friend.

The brave border collie isn’t the only dog who has been captured on video saving another animal.

Some dogs even risk themselves to save their natural enemy, the cat. Another video showed a dog who came to the aid of a cat who was stuck in a manmade pond.

Surrounded by a high wall, the poor cat was trapped, frightened, and freezing. As the dog assessed the situation, the cat even lashed out at it in fear, hissing and scratching it on the nose.

But that didn’t deter the brave little dog. It leaped into the water and dived under the cat, carrying it on its back to safety. The grateful cat scrambled out of the pond with the dog behind it.

Of course, dogs have been known to protect humans, too.

Back in 2008, a mother dog adopted a newborn who had been abandoned in a field in Argentina. The infant had been left outside in almost freezing weather. Police found him snuggled up with a mother dog and her litter of puppies.

The dog had carried him about 55 yards from where she had found him back to her den, where her own babies were taking shelter.

“She took it like a puppy and rescued it,” said Chief of Police Daniel Salcedo. “The doctors told us if she hadn’t done this, he would have died. The dog is a hero to us.”

The infant was only a couple of hours old when authorities found him. He had some light injuries but was otherwise, he was a completely healthy, nearly nine-pound baby. It was all thanks to the mother dog who found an extra baby and was determined to keep him safe.

People often say we don’t deserve dogs, and that’s probably true.

It’s obvious they are willing to go above and beyond to protect others, whether that entails other dogs, different types of other animals, or even people. So, it’s true: we don’t deserve dogs.
