Mona Ahmed was walking around an animal shelter in Fresno, California one day. As she passed a small kennel, she noticed a tiny black Chihuahua mix sitting on top of a large yellow dog that was missing one paw.

“My heart just melted to see the love they have for each other,” she told The Dodo. “Right away I took my phone out and took a picture.”

Ahmed goes into this high-kill shelter every week and takes photos of the dogs. She then posts the photos to Facebook to help the dogs find forever homes. She decided to take a photo of the Chihuahua mix, Felix, and the Labrador retriever, Oscar, for her page. She tried to separate them for the photos, but the two pups wouldn’t leave each other’s side. Finally, she took a photo of the two of them playing together.

When Ahmed asked one of the shelter workers about the dogs, she learned some terrible news: both dogs were going to be put down later that day.

Sadly, both Oscar and Felix had kennel cough, a highly contagious disease. The shelter workers didn’t want the disease to spread to the other dogs in the shelter, and so they felt like they had no choice but to euthanize them.

Ahmed has completely fallen in love with the two dogs, and she knew she had to save them. She asked the shelter workers to give her time to find someone who could take in Felix and Oscar. The shelter workers agreed to give her one day to find a home for the pups.

Ahmed quickly called up Christi Camblor, co-founder of rescue organization Compassion Without Borders (CWOB). When Camblor saw Ahmed’s photo of Felix and Oscar, she knew she had to help them:

“We almost never take dogs sight unseen,” Camblor says. “I usually go down and pick the dogs myself. But that photo. It was such a sweet photo. So I asked [volunteers] to go back and evaluate them to make sure they were friendly.”

A couple CWOB volunteers met with Felix and Oscar, and once they saw how sweet they were, they agreed to take them. The volunteers drove the two pups over to CWOB’s Santa Rosa rescue center, Muttopia.

When they got to the rescue facility, the two dogs couldn’t stop coughing. But their tails still wagged with happiness when they saw their new home.

Felix and Oscar are feeling better and better every day, and they still spend all their time together.

“If they’re sleeping, they’re sleeping together — exactly how that photo captured it,” Camblor says. “When we let them loose, they’re running around together. They are very bonded. They also seem to get very anxious if they need to be separated.”

These two dogs love each other very much, and they’ll always look out for each other. These two sweet dogs are best friends for life!
