Usually, when you hear a story about a puppy and their parent forming an incredible bond, it’s about a puppy and their mom. But sometimes, puppies and their dads can form great bonds too.
That’s just what happened with a sweet four-year-old Boxer named Big Daddy and his two-year-old son Buddy.
Buddy was born blind, and because of that, he sometimes has trouble finding his way around new environments. Soon after Buddy was born, he and his dad were taken to an animal shelter in North Carolina.
Big Daddy seemed to realize that Buddy needs some extra help, and so he started guiding his son around their animal shelter.
Buddy loves his dad more than anything on the world, and he relies on him for guidance. Every minute or two, Buddy will bump into Big Daddy just to make sure that he’s still there. Big Daddy doesn’t mind—he’s happy to take care of his son.
Big Daddy and Buddy were adopted soon after they arrived at the shelter, and it seemed like the pair’s story had a happy ending. Unfortunately, though, the pair’s first adopters returned the dogs to the crowded shelter. The shelter staff were sad and worried—they knew it would be hard to find another forever home for this bonded pair.
“The fact is, it’s a little tougher to get a pair of dogs adopted together, especially when one has a minor disability and they’re in an overcrowded shelter in the south, and time is of the essence,” Associated Humane Society Popcorn Park wrote on Facebook.
Thankfully, animal rescue organization Flying Fur Animal Rescue stepped into help. This animal rescue saves dogs and cats from overcrowded, high-kill shelters.
Paul Steklenski, a pilot and the founder of Flying Fur Animal Rescue, flew down to North Carolina and picked up Buddy and Big Daddy. Then, he took them to Associated Humane Society Popcorn Park, an animal shelter in New Jersey that had space for the pups. The pair quickly settled into their new home.
“The pair are adorable together and Big Daddy has such patience with his son, who occasionally crashes into him and knocks him over,” AHS wrote.
Now, AHS is working on finding the right forever home for the pair. The shelter has vowed to never separate the pups.
“They are both such sweet, well-behaved boys that love people of all ages and get along fine with other dogs too. They are now looking for a home where they can stay together forever and have a good family of their own to love and care for them.”
