In June 2019, a mechanic bought a new piece of construction equipment for his garage.
The mechanic started checking out the equipment, and to his shock, he found two five-week-old kitten siblings trapped inside!
The kittens were tiny, and there seemed to be something wrong with their eyes. One of the kittens, Monkey, had ulcers in her eyes. Her brother, Smooshy, had almost no eyes—his eyelids were mostly closed.
The mechanic brought the kittens home, and he and his family took them to the vet. It was clear the kittens would need a lot of help, and so the vet recommended that the mechanic bring them to Elizabeth Putsche, the executive director of For All Animals in Maryland.
Elizabeth took the kittens in and gave them all the love and care they needed.
The mostly blind kittens were as sweet as could be. They loved cuddling with Elizabeth and the volunteers at For All Animals, and they also loved playing together.
Elizabeth took the kittens to an ophthalmologist to find out more about their eye problems. There, she learned that the kittens both had upper eyelid agenesis. Since they were so young, it was probably from an infection their mother had.
“Monkey also suffers from Peters’ anomaly (or anterior segment dysgenesis). Which is a failure of the normal development of the tissues of the anterior segment of the eye. It presents as a foggy white haze on the outer sides of her eyes, and inhibits her vision. But we won’t know the full extent of the injury until she grows more,” Elizabeth told Cole and Marmalade.
Both kittens needed surgery on their eyes, and so Elizabeth started fundraising to pay for the surgery. Over the next month, the kittens continued growing at a normal rate. But unfortunately, on August 6, 2019, Smooshy suddenly got sick. He passed away the next day, leaving Elizabeth and her staff devastated.
“We always hope for the best – but sometimes, there is nothing we can do. Smooshy was loved inside and out and knew happiness, love, and friendship. He loved his sister Monkey with all his heart,” Elizabeth wrote on Facebook. “The vet thinks it was a congenital defect with his intestines – as Monkey seems unaffected. We will be closely monitoring her to make sure she is okay. Thank you for your support and loving this little munchkin from afar.”
Monkey cleared misses her brother, but she thankfully seems to be healthy. Elizabeth is continuing to raise money for the surgery on her eyes.
After Monkey gets the surgery, Elizabeth will begin searching for the right forever home for this brave little kitten. Elizabeth knows Monkey will bring tons of love and joy into whatever home she ends up in.
