After more than a year of living in an animal rescue shelter, Jacko is finally coming home to his forever family.
Yay! But who is Jacko?
Jacko is a 6-year-old border collie who also happened to be blind. He has struggled in kennels in the past because of his condition. Because he couldn’t see, he could only make out shadows, every unnecessary noise stressed him out.
And if he doesn’t recognize the shadow, he will bark and worry needlessly. It’s a difficult life for a blind dog at a shelter.
When the staff at Many Tears Animal Rescue took him in, they made sure to shower him with love and affection. They also took care of all his needs every day. But, of course, nothing beats the care and love of a forever family at their forever home.
Despite this challenging situation, Jacko remained cheerful and hopeful.
“[He’s] extremely cuddly, affectionate, intelligent, and a very happy lovely boy,” shelter volunteers shared.
Unfortunately, the adoption process for him was slow.
It was also partly because of what the shelter decided for Jacko’s best interest.
“We made the decision that Jacko should be rehomed in a calm environment, with one or two people, so that he could build trust,” Cassie Mogford, a Many Tears Animal Rescue volunteer, said. “Plus, [someone with] a large, secure area that he could safely and securely run around in without having to go out on the streets and public playing areas.”
They narrowed it down even further by only approving applications with adult-only homes.
That made a lot of sense since children will not be able to properly manage a blind dog. And if the children make one wrong move because they had no idea it could be harmful, it could hurt both Jacko and the children.
So an adult-only home for Jacko is a great idea.
Narrowing it down to the specifics helped them find the perfect human for Jacko. Her name is Sue.
“Sue saw a video on TikTok that we made of Jacko once he had been with us for one year,” Mogford said. “She came to meet Jacko after filling out her application form and fell in love. Our staff then took Jacko personally to her home to ensure that his journey was as stress-free as possible and to ensure that he was set up for a successful introduction to his new dog friends and home.”
Fortunately for Jacko and Sue, the application was approved and they get to live with each other now. Plus Sue’s other dog, Zoom.
Sue lives in a home with acres of land for Jacko to run through. It also turns out that Sue works as a dog trainer for a living and she’s had lots of experience training blind dogs. What a perfect combination!
Sue and Jacko struggled a bit with the adjustment period because Jacko wasn’t used to all that freedom. But once he knew how to work it, he went all out!
It also worked out for Sue, who was going through tough times. Having Jacko and Zoom with her was helping her get through this challenging chapter in her life. She’s absolutely thrilled she is able to provide a perfect home for Jacko.
