In February 2018, an employee at a Los Angeles junkyard came across a shocking sight: an elderly pit bull tied up underneath a truck.

The 12-year-old gray dog had been abandoned by his former owner and left to fend for himself. The dog was in bad shape—he was starving, dirty, and severely dehydrated.

The junkyard employee gave the suffering dog food and water and then called up animal rescue organization Hope for Paws. The kindhearted employee wanted Hope for Paws to take the dog before her boss called animal control.

Two rescuers from Hope for Paws, Lisa Arturo and JoAnn Wiltz, quickly hopped in their truck and drove over to the junkyard to get the dog. When they got there, they were stunned by what a bad state he was in.

Arturo and Wiltz worked on getting the tired, sick dog to trust them. They gave him food and talked to him in a reassuring voice, and they showed him that they wanted to help him.

Once the dog trusted them, they tried to get him to come to them. But the poor dog had an old, rotted rope around his neck that prevented him from moving. Arturo and Wiltz cut the rope off, and the dog was finally free.

Arturo and Wiltz decided to name the sweet dog Duncan.

They immediately brought Duncan over to a veterinarian to get him checked out. There, the rescuers learned that the poor dog was completely blind and had two corneal ulcers, two mass cell tumors, periodontal disease, and a skin infection. The veterinarian prescribed medicine to help alleviate Duncan’s pain.

After his check-up, the veterinarian gave Duncan a much-needed bath. Duncan was so dirty, he changed colors during the bath—his fur went from dingy gray to a beautiful brown and white.

After Duncan was all finished at the veterinarian’s office, Arturo and Wiltz brought the pup over to his new foster home. The senior dog rescue organization Frosted Faces Foundation offered to handle his fostering, and they placed him with one of their experienced foster parents.

Duncan was shy at first, but his foster parents showered him with love, showing him that he was in a safe place. Slowly, the dog began to open up.

Duncan began regaining energy, and he got more and more comfortable in his foster house. He loved playing with his foster brother, and he was also a big fan of taking naps in the laundry basket!
