Animal workers insisted that this duo be adopted as a pair since Denver was the only puppy in the litter to play with Star.

Star and Denver have already been through quite a lot despite being just four months old.

The two Terrier mix puppies were dumped along with their mother and six other siblings in rural Louisiana before making their way across the country to San Diego for a second chance at life.

Fortunately, a kind family rescued the dumped dogs and decided to keep the mom, bringing the babies to a rescue for adoption.

But like many shelters in the country, this one was already overburdened with puppies. Fortunately, a partner shelter called the Helen Woodward Animal Center stepped in.

After hearing about the situation, the Woodward Center made arrangements for all of the puppies in the litter, as well as 31 others the shelter was unable to place, to make the 1,900-mile trip to California.

Upon their arrival, the staff at the Center noticed that one of the puppies in the Louisiana litter, a female named Star, had special needs. She is deaf and almost completely blind, but she was successful at using her other senses to navigate the world.

Her biggest aid was one of her littermates, a male puppy named Denver. The rest of the litter was content to play without her.

Denver protected Star and the two became inseparable. Even when Denver would frolic with the other high-energy puppies, he would always return to check on his sister.

The Helen Woodward Center staff decided that the two would have to be adopted together.

“Her brother Denver really stuck by her side,” Jessica Gercke, spokesperson for the Center, told CBS8 News. “Even though there were eight of them Denver was really sticking near her, guiding her around. She was depending on him.”

While the pair was supposed to go up for adoption in late February, Denver suffered a bee sting and needed some time to recover. In the meantime, news stations across the country picked up the pair’s story. That led to an influx of calls with people begging to adopt the pair.

“These puppies have gone beyond anything we’ve seen so far,” said Gercke. “We got a call the other day, someone asked if they could ship them overseas, which of course we won’t. We’re going to keep them as long as we need to, to make sure they’re together.”

A few weeks after all the offers to adopt the new celebrity puppies had been vetted, Star and Denver got to go to their new forever home — together!

On March 11, the Helen Woodward Center posted the update:

“We are thrilled to share with you that our famous puppy pair, Star and Denver, have found the perfect forever home! Watch as their new parents discover that their adoption fees have been fully sponsored by a generous donor. Star and Denver have started their new life in Encinitas with their devoted mom and dad.”

A kind donor even sponsored the payment of their adoption fees.

But before the beloved puppies left the Center, the staff threw them a goodbye/congratulations party during which all the people who had cared for them over the previous weeks got a chance to say goodbye.

We’re so happy this duo made it to the good life and that shelters and private organizations around the country work together to make sure every animal gets a chance to find a real home.

If you’ve ever donated to an animal organization, this is the kind of good work your money funds!
