Meet Kimchi the Cocker Spaniel and Ginger the Golden Retriever: two senior pups with an incredible bond!

The dogs’ parents, Thea and Eric, first adopted Ginger in 2012. The Golden Retriever was eleven at the time, and she hadn’t been properly socialized as a puppy. Because of that, she was aggressive around other dogs. Thea and Eric had been planning on adopting another dog, but they put those plans on hold when they saw Ginger’s reactions to other pups.

But then, everything changed when Ginger met Cocker Spaniel Kimchi.

Philippines-based rescue group Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) found Kimchi cowering on a quiet street. The pup had clearly been abandoned, and he was mostly blind. CARA estimated that he was around nine to twelve years old.

Thea and Eric fell in love with Kimchi, and they hoped Ginger would like him too. They took Ginger to meet Kimchi, and the dogs immediately bonded. Ginger even gave Kimchi an affectionate lick!

Thea and Eric officially adopted Kimchi, and the pup headed to his new home. For his first few years with the couple, Kimchi was able to get around on his own. But in 2015, the dog went completely blind. Kimchi was still fine walking around the house on his own since he knew it so well. When he was outside, though, he badly needed help finding his way around.

To Thea and Eric’s surprise, Ginger started leading Kimchi around. Ginger had no seeing eye dog training, but she seemed to instinctively know how to help her blind best buddy.

“Kimchi doesn’t mind being led around, for the most part anyway,” the couple wrote on Facebook. “Ginger is Kimchi’s eyes, and he gets his confidence and courage from her.”

The couple decided to start leashing Kimchi to Ginger when they were on their walks.

Both dogs were happy with the arrangement. Kimchi felt more confident with Ginger attached to him, and Ginger loved helping her friend.

Some people worried that the dogs weren’t happy about being leashed together. But on Ginger and Kimchi’s Facebook page, Eric explained that the dogs have never shown any negative feelings towards the leash:

“Ginger is very patient, she gently tugs at Kimchi to where we lead her to. But more often than not, she can take Kimchi to any direction she chooses, as we often walk behind them. Kimchi, totally trusts his soul-sister, and allows himself to be led…They don’t mind being leashed to each other, they’ve been doing it for the last 3 or 4 years. They’re comfortable with each other. If they really so hate it, why would they go crazy whenever they see us seemingly preparing for a trip to the mall or park?”
