Dogs and horses can quickly become best friends. They love showing affection, and both enjoy a good snack. Moreover, dogs and horses share a common language of play. Here is video proof.
Joey O’Brien visited the stables at his grandma’s house in New York state and took his black labrador along.
The confused doggo had the most adorable reaction. Look at him, curiously standing on his hind legs, peering over the stable doors. The pup even got up close to one horse’s face. What happened next was hilarious. Enjoy!
Wagging tail, jumping happily all over the place; doggy is ready to make friends.
Take a look at the dog’s beautiful, shiny, black coat in contrast to the bright red collar. You can see that the pooch is a happy, healthy animal. His parents take good care of him. Of course, the dog’s owner had to take the camera out and film the dog’s first encounter with horses.
We couldn’t stop laughing at the dog’s confusion, it seems like the labrador would want to play with all the horses at once, but he’s a little bit scared. Luckily, the horses are very calm, and they have patience with the new fellow at the stable.
At one moment, the puppy shares a long stare with one of the horses, gets a bit scared and takes a few steps back.
The labrador’s hesitation, however, doesn’t last long. It’s funny how the dog gets scared, but he won’t give up on meeting every mare and colt personally. The black furball is constantly running back and forth and spreads joy across the stable.
To be fair, the horses seem to be intrigued as well. They’ve probably never been visited by such a joyful, friendly little guy before.
Interestingly, dogs and horses can build strong friendships.
People who grew up surrounded by different animals have likely seen a unique friendship firsthand. Dogs and horses have a lot in common; they are affectionate, playful, and enjoy food. They also share common behaviors for fun.
When a dog wants to invite another dog to play, his front legs are usually bowed, and his tail is high and wagging. Amazingly, several recent studies have shown that most horses follow the same behavior pattern they want to play.
How to introduce your dog to a horse?
Safety first! The dog should be on a lead, and the horse should be in a stable or behind a fence. It is also essential to always remember that horses are easily spooked. They are sensitive animals, and the best option is to introduce them to new friends in a low-stress environment.
Both dogs and horses need to take time to adapt to the presence of a new animal around them. Fortunately, their calm nature speeds up the adjustment process. Everyone is slightly cautious when meeting someone new. Humans take time to process new acquaintances. Allow your animals to do the same. Give them enough time and space.
Allow the dog to observe the horse and reward good behavior.
Keep those treats ready. Keep in mind that your dog needs to be adequately trained. If your beloved pet does not return to you on recall, maybe it’s better to postpone meeting horses for some other time and to do some more training instead.
The video clearly shows a properly trained labrador who will listen to his owner’s commands. Therefore, the situation is funny and enjoyable.
Love your animals, keep them safe, and if they happen to hang out all together, grab the camera!
