In Depth Review And Process

For years, I have been getting my dog whichever cheap dog bed that I could find on Amazon or at my local Target/Walmart. I did this for a combination of reasons — I wasn’t earning quite as much and honestly I didn’t really see the purpose of getting my dog a nicer bed.

The issue with this is that I would keep needing to replace the beds (for a number of reasons). Most weren’t that chew/bite resistant, others would start to stink very soon, and others just didn’t look that good over time. Finally, I decided my dog (and I!) deserved a nicer dog bed.

I set out to evaluate the “top” dog beds on the market today. Finally, I decided to systematically go through a process of testing different dog beds. I went through this process and ranked the dog beds I found via the following method:

  • Comfort
  • Durability (chew, bite, and scratch resistance)
  • Features and Functionality
  • Return policy / warranty
  • Value

Overall, the best dog bed my dog Kodak slept on (and that I liked) was the Crate and Kibble Cloud Bed. This bed was by far the best one, for a number of reasons (which we’ll detail below). It was actually extremely durable and resistant, waterproof (and so also, resistant to smelling bad), easy to wash/assemble, looks amazing, and most importantly, my dog loved how comfortable, cool, and supportive it was. I’m so glad that this purchase was one of the things that we 100% agree on! He loved it the most out of all the beds, and so did I.

Is It Worth It To Consider Dog Beds Under $50?

I personally do not think it is best to consider the options under $50. You will likely save money in the long run because the manufacturers of cheaper dog beds tend to cut corners – these dog beds also generally do not last as long. If you get the right dog bed (even if it is more expensive), you’ll likely save money in the long run.

As an example, some dog beds tend to use lower quality fabric, which results in less durable dog beds (and dog beds that smell sooner!). A lot of cheaper dog beds also skimp out on the filling, which causes the dog bed to provide less support and feel flat.

It is worth it to invest in a higher quality dog bed – especially when you consider how much impact a better dog bed can have on BOTH your dog’s sleep quality and your own sanity. The right dog bed can help your dog and you at the same time.

The Bottom Line

This dog bed is the top of the top, crème de la crème. I used to think that there was little to no difference between cheaper and pricier dog beds — but the quality of the Crate & Kibble Cloud bed for dogs changed my mind.

First thing is first, my dog LOVES this bed – just take a look at him cozying up in it. I purchased a bunch of beds as part of this test, and I’m happy to report that this bed was his clear favorite – I would even try to put him in other beds to test them out, but he just didn’t like them as much and would always move back to the C&K bed. My sense is that he loves it for a few particular reasons:

  1. High Bolsters – he loves the high bolsters that he can rest his chin on. In a lot of ways, the bolsters make the bed feel like a “den” for him. I’ve noticed that when he is in his bed, he is extremely calm, noticeably calmer than he was in other beds.
  2. Cooling properties – I live in a warmer area (Florida), and I think he really likes this bed because not only is it supportive and comfortable, it is also super cooling — the oxford material in the inner bed stays cool and the gel memory foam core is also cooler than most traditional memory foam and polyfill.
  3. Supportive and comforting memory foam core – the memory foam core is an orthopedic core that is both comfortable and supportive for my dog. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified, so I’m confident that is high quality (and my dog can definitely tell!)
  4. Non slip bottom and scratch resistant bottom – this might seem surprising, but the non slip bottom is great for my dog. When you couple that with the scratch resistant bottom, he can scratch and “dig” into the bottom of the bed and it won’t slip. He has so much fun doing that, and I like it too, because it tires him out !

I love this bed so much and find it so worth the money because not only is it great for pets, but it’s even better for pet owners. Here are the reasons that I love this bed, as a pet owner:

  1. Waterproof and odor resistant: this bed is 100% waterproof, so my dog’s slobber (and occasional pee) don’t seep into the fabric and the core. This way, it doesn’t get stinky and I don’t need to wash it as often. It’s also fine for me to put it outside (even if it wet), and I don’t have to worry about the bed’s integrity.
  2. Chew resistant, scratch resistant, and indestructible – this bed is very durable, and i love that as an owner. My dog has chewed through many other dog beds and he hasn’t (yet) chewed through this one. My dog also loves “digging” in the bed and the bed has held up very well against that.
  3. Easy to assemble and wash (even though you don’t do it too often) – this bed was so easy to put together, and the removable core is even easier to remove and wash. And that’s when you have to wash it (which isn’t that often, anyways).
  4. Removable core – the removable core is super convenient to wash, but it’s even better as an ‘on the go’ mini dog bed. I sometimes just pull the core out and lay it in the back of my car, and my dog loves just lying there and sleeping on it.
  5. Designed beautifully and thoughtfully – I love the textured look of the bolsters, and the minimalist design overall. It just looks good at my house, and the neutral color fits with the rest of my furniture.

You can tell that Crate and Kibble put a ton of thought and effort into this dog bed and that they really paid attention to the small details that would make the bed great for owners and for pets. This pillow is seriously a case of you get what you pay for – with high quality materials, an innovative shape, and incredible customer service and experience, this pillow is the best option if you want to alleviate neck pain.

UPDATE (2 months later!): My dog has been sleeping on this dog bed for 8 months now, and it is still the best one. I’m super satisfied with the overall quality and durability of this bed. He hasn’t chewed through it and he continues to use it everyday!

The Bottom Line

Orvis is one of the most “premium” dog beds available on the market today. At the price they charge ($300 – $400), we expected the best. And, in all honesty, it is a solid dog bed by all measures. I’m just not sure if it is the best one available on the market today, especially for the money.

Here’s an overview of what my dog liked and didn’t like:

Kodak’s likes:

  • He was relatively cozy in this bed when he did use it (I removed all other beds for a few days to see how he would like this one – when he had beds to choose from, he chose the Crate & Kibble bed every time)
  • The “couch” design is pretty nice and he liked the bolsters as well

Kodak’s dislikes:

  • The microfiber cover can get warm, so it is tougher to sleep on it during warmer seasons
  • For some reason, he didn’t love “digging” in the bed as much as he did for others

And here are my likes and dislikes:

What I liked:

  • I liked the choice of different colors, so I could get the best one for my home. The bed does look good (I like the piping)
  • I liked that I could engrave his name in the bed!

What to watch out for:

  • This was a bit tougher to assemble
  • The price point was super high!
  • It does look flatter in person than online
  • The bottom can slip easily
  • Because the microfiber cover isn’t waterproof, it starts to smell sooner and needs to be cleaned pretty often

Overall, this is a solid bed, and depending on what’s important to you, can be a good choice. We just think there are other, better options for the money you pay for this bed.

CONS
X

X

X

The Bottom Line

This dog bed will provide your dog’s entire body with support to eliminate pressure point aches and pains. While this is a solid bed, we didn’t see as many features in this bed (and also didn’t like the look as much) as the Crate & Kibble bed. That being said, it is still a solid dog bed that is comfortable.

What we like:

  • The surface has extra material that gives dog’s the sensation of digging in the dirt as they circle to find their best resting position
  • Maintains its shape due to its fortified construction
  • Chew and water-resistant

What to watch out for:

  • Reviewers report that the cover is lower quality and pills easily
  • Bolsters are a bit low, so our dog didn’t enjoy cuddling up in it as much
  • I don’t really like how it looks
  • Material is unforgiving when it comes to stains

You can see that this dog bed isn’t the best – it’s a decent memory foam bed, but by no means the best.

The Bottom Line

This is another decent dog bed — I like it more than Casper but less than the Crate & Kibble dog bed. My primary issue with this bed is that I thought it was waterproof, but it isn’t. It turns out it’s just water resistant.

A lot of other users also complained about this issue:

What we like:

  • Constructed with solid CertiPUR-US orthopedic memory foam
  • Breathable bed cover
  • Built-in pillow
  • Certified skin-contact safe
  • Comes with a three-year warranty

What to watch out for:

  • The bolsters are a bit low
  • Also holds a lot of hair, which is hard to clear
  • Users complain about the zipper breaking
  • Isn’t fully waterproof

X

X

The Bottom Line

This 7-inch bed is made specifically for large to larger dog breeds. It is overall a nice bed, with its primary feature being its size. This dog bed is a very good option, however, if you have a “barking horse” as some owners call their dogs (dogs that weigh 200 lbs or more).

However, if your dog doesn’t fall into that category, this bed might not be the best choice because it is expensive, lacks additional features, and will likely be too big for your space.

The thicker memory foam does do more to support heavier dogs, but it drastically increases the cost and to be honest, is not necessary if you have a smaller dog.

Also because there is so much foam (which drives up the price of the bed), the company didn’t have much budget to add additional features/improvements, which we would have liked for a bed of this price. For example, the cover is made of microfiber, is pretty thing, and isn’t that chew/dig resistant. It also isn’t waterproof and there is no liner that protects the memory foam – this makes the bed kind of a hassle to clean (especially if there are any accidents) and prone to absorbing odors.

What we like:

  • Available in L, XL, and XXL
  • Clinically proven to provide excellent support by the University of Pennsylvania
  • 7-Inch thickness
  • Built-in pillow
  • Made in the US
  • Easy to clean

What to watch out for:

  • Not dig proof
  • Microfiber cover fabric is thin and is relatively easy for dogs to chew through
  • Some reviewers claimed it was low quality despite the hefty price tag
  • Expensive

You can see that this dog bed is good if you have a very large dog, but is not as great for most other dogs.

The Bottom Line

The Best Friends by Sheri dog bed is another classic that we were both excited to test. After testing it, however, I have to say that I was a bit disappointed. While it does seem to be a very cozy bed, it actually wasn’t the best fit for my dog.

Here’s what my dog liked and didn’t like:

What he liked:

  • At first, he did like cozying up inside it
  • The interior edges are deep enough that he could burrow inside it

What he didn’t like:

  • He started to overheat after lying on it for a while, so left soon
  • The bottom cushion doesn’t provide enough support (especially for medium/larger dogs), so he tended to eventually gravitate towards the beds that had more support

And of course – here’s what I liked and didn’t like:

What I liked:

  • I think it looks pretty good!
  • Unfortunately, it ends there

What I didn’t like:

  • Although it claims to be machine washable, it falls apart in the wash
  • It tears easily and is definitely not chew proof
  • It also starts to stink pretty quickly, so it does require a decent amount of washing

This bed could be a good option for smaller dogs who need less support, but if you want a bed that is easy to maintain, will last, and will provide your dog enough support, this probably isn’t the best option.

CONS

The Bottom Line

This dog bed is a decent option for an owner and pet really looking to optimize one thing – resistant to chewing. However, it doesn’t offer much else, and honestly isn’t even a perfect solution to dogs who like to chew – just look at what one Amazon reviewer said about the bed:

Now that being said, we did NOT have this experience with this bed — and in general, it does seem that this bed is generally more resistant to chewing than other beds (but it’s not foolproof). Here’s a more detailed overview of what we liked and didn’t like:

What he liked:

  • It sleeps cooler – the design of this bed is breathable
  • He liked “digging” on it

What he didn’t like:

  • It doesn’t provide that much support and so he soon left for other beds
  • there weren’t any bolsters, so it’s not much of a “den” and doesn’t seem that comfortable to be honest

And of course – here’s what I liked and didn’t like:

What I liked:

  • He didn’t chew it!

What I didn’t like:

  • I don’t like how it looks
  • It isn’t the best for diggers – while it didn’t rip while we were testing it, it did look like it was maybe close. And keep in mind my dog only used it briefly, since he liked the other beds more
  • Hand wash only, and you kind of have to hose it down to clean, which can get annoying

The Bottom Line

We wanted to try a value option, so we purchased this one — and honestly, it’s not terrible, but it isn’t great either. Overall, I think it’s a decent option if you don’t mind having to replace it pretty often or are just looking for a ‘throwaway’ bed that you don’t have to worry too much about if it gets damaged (which it honestly likely will). It could be a good backup option to give to a Rover or someone watching your dog.

Here’s some more detail on what we liked and didn’t like about it:

What he liked:

  • He would rather sleep on this than the floor, but he didn’t really like it compared to other beds

What he didn’t like:

  • There were no bolsters and it wasn’t as “diggable”

And of course – here’s what I liked and didn’t like:

What I liked:

  • Price

What I didn’t like:

  • I don’t like how it looks
  • It isn’t machine washable

It’s a decent option for the price, but doesn’t offer much to be honest.

Conclusions

For most dogs, I highly recommend the Crate & Kibble Cloud Bed for Dogs. The quality of the foam, the innovative shape, and the cover are all best in class. And if you don’t like it, you have 60 full days to return. That being said, you can try any of the beds on this list and see for yourself, hopefully risk free (well except for a few!).
