For a family in West Hartford, Connecticut, living around bears is nothing new. People in the area are used to seeing them around, and they sometimes even enter their yards and enjoy “snacks” from their trees.
But breaking into their home and destroying stuff? This has never happened before, as a homeowner explained after he posted a video of him trying to take a bear out of his house.
“We’ve been having bears for years, but this is the first time they’ve ever done something that’s going to be damaging to anything,” the man told ABC7.
In the video that Bill Priest shared on Facebook, he can be seen talking to a bear in order for the wild animal to leave his home.
“Go on! That way, go! Get out of here!” he can be heard saying in the video.
The bear had entered through the front door, after breaking down the screen door, and it walked around the house ending up in the kitchen.
This was not the first time Priest had found the “intruder” on his property. A week earlier, he had found the same black bear in the garage, where it had tried to break into the refrigerator.
“I mean, I don’t care, run around the yard all you want, but now you’ve crossed the line,” Priest told NBC Connecticut.
The man explained that when the bear broke into his home, he heard a noise but thought it was just his wife checking out the front door. Only when he went inside at about 11:30am- he had been working outside his home- did he realize it had been the bear all along.
Since that was not the first sighting of the black bear in the property, the family contacted the local authorities and arranged to have bear traps set up by a crew from Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
The authorities also planned to safely and humanely catch the bear and relocate it, but they have had no luck so far.
The video that has also been uploaded on YouTube has gone viral and received dozens of comments, many of which have to do with how friendly the bear looks.
“He looked so sad and disappointed you didn’t want to be his friend!” someone wrote, while another user commented: “It’s easy to tell that the bear has been friends with man at some point and no longer sees a threat nor becomes aggressive.”
It is true, as experts agree, that black bears are less aggressive than brown bears, and more tolerant of people.
Black bears also don’t react violently when they perceive something as a threat, they just choose to retreat.
However, having a wild bear at home does not sound like a good idea, since they are still an undomesticated species and a close relationship with them can never be 100% safe.
