If you didn’t know, dogs are some of the smartest animals on the planet. Through thousands of years of selected breeding, they have learned how to do extremely particular things, too! They can hunt, track, and so much more – all from selective breeding by humans.

We aren’t here to talk about how beagles hunt or track, however. We want to discuss how beagles can… play the piano! Oh, you didn’t know they could play instruments? Well, neither did most people until they saw a recent video the proved otherwise!

Buddy Mercury, clearly named after a famous individual, has some real talents when it comes to musical ability. In fact, he has his own YouTube channel where his family uploads videos of him enjoying some music and singing (and sometimes playing) along.

In one of his most viral hits, Buddy Mercury was playing with his little sibling when he decided to hit the keys.

Dogs and babies always seem to get along and Buddy is no different. These two have a special connection, however, because Baby loves to sing and dance. You know who else loves just that? Buddy!

As Baby dances and sings, Buddy decides he wants to hop on the keys and sing a little tune to accompany the child.

Leaping up and putting his paws on the piano, Buddy starts hitting the keys. It’s almost like he knows exactly what he’s doing! As he hits the various keys, he even goes and starts harmonizing with them by howling. The scene is a bit chaotic with a baby swinging and dancing and a dog playing and singing, but truthfully, it’s pretty amazing!

He lifts his paw and hits single notes to sing along to. After he hits the note, he howls for a second or two, just for show! After the note finishes on the piano, he picks another one and repeats the process. If you didn’t know any better, you might say that he is having his own private concert!

While it may seem off-key, dogs do this intentionally!

The AKC explains:

In fact, research suggests that canines actually have a sense of pitch. For example, as more wolves join in, each one changes its tone, and recordings have shown that each wolf is howling a different note. Your dog, too, can differentiate pitch and tone. Dogs also pick up higher frequencies than the human ear, so they may be howling along to something you can’t even hear. Your dog may deliberately join in at a completely different pitch or note just to individualize his howl.

Buddy isn’t singing off key by accident, he’s doing it to sound special and unique! In fact, “good sounding music” isn’t even a real thing, it’s all cultural. Dogs just happen to like “clashing notes” so they can stand out better!
