A Philadelphia woman walked out of her home one morning to leave her house for work when she found two strange dogs on her porch.
Not only had she never seen these dogs but they were badly abused, malnourished, and in need of immediate medical attention.
“These dogs were on my patio this morning when I was leaving for work…they were badly beaten and used as bait…..bleeding. Broken bones..malnourished… Makes me sick to look at these poor animals. How people can do this is beyond me. I hope they can be saved,” the woman reportedly said according to Save the Labs Facebook page.
The woman was horrified to see the condition these dogs were in.
They were covered in open wounds and also had broken bones.
The Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia came to evaluate the dogs and described them as “mellow and calm although very frightened.” They were named Sweet Pea and Dizzy.
After photos of the injured dogs were posted on social media, Rescue Dogs Rock New York City decided to step up and take care of the dogs.
After looking over the dogs they discovered that it appeared that the dogs were used as bait dogs for fighting dogs.
Bait dogs are often chained or confined while fighting dogs bit and tear the bait dog to subdue their opposing dog by incapacitating or killing the bait dog.
The thought of it is just absolutely heartbreaking that someone could do that to such a loving creature.
But thankfully, Sweet Pea and Dizzy were now in good hands and getting medical attention.
“They have been on IV fluids & antibiotics & waiting on various tests. These poor dogs were both a mess, covered in bite wounds, even in their mouths,” Rescue Dogs Rock NYC wrote on Facebook.
Dizzy was in the worse shape out of the two dogs.
“Dizzy was the worst off with the most infected wounds & also the more shy & scared of the 2. Sadly, he has tested positive for babesia (common in fighting dogs). We are still waiting on some blood results for Sweet Pea,” Rescue Dogs Rock NYC said. “Both are incredibly sweet & deserving dogs & we are honored to be part of their journey!”
Both dogs are doing much much better now. They will be neutered and spayed and will undergo some behavioral assessments so they can be put up for adoption.
