Scott Moore was a little nervous about his new baby home. It had nothing to with the midnight feedings and sleepless nights, the crying, or even the diaper changing.

He was concerned about how his other baby would get along. And by other baby, we mean his beagle, Buddy.

“My wife and I were worried about how the dog would react to a baby, so we kept them apart for a few months,” he explains in a caption for a video he posted on YouTube. “This is when they get introduced to each other.”

And his worry is warranted. Experts say that there’s lots of preparation that must be taking in into consideration when introducing a baby and a dog.

“As soon as you know there is a baby on the way —and this also means visiting one— it is good to polish up on your beagle’s behaviour,” Beagle Health writes. “Make sure he knows not to jump up, that he will settle down in his bed when asked, and that he is used to some periods on his own.”

It’s crucial to make sure that everyone in the home knows the rules and follows through with them.

This way there will be consistency and the dog isn’t getting mixed messages.

“It is hard for a dog which has being the center of attention to understand he is less important but if you make the ground rules early on he will accept having less of your time more easily,” Beagle Health says. “Teach him to accept not being allowed in certain areas such as the baby’s bedroom and get him used to being put away at times. It is safer to start with rules such as never leaving the dog in the room with the baby when no adult is there from day one, so get your dog used to being put quietly where you want.”

It’s also really important to make sure that your dog is up to date on his shots and is in good health so the dog doesn’t get the baby sick.

And it looks like the Moore family followed all the rules because Buddy and their baby have gotten along just fine. Buddy immediately walks up to the baby and gives him a quick kiss.

The baby seems super curious about the beagle and crawls over to him.

That’s when the Buddy wiggles around on his back showing that he is submissive to the baby. He even lets the baby grab him and squish his face a bit before continuing with the kisses.
