The elusive fox – known for being sneaky, swiping, and… not swiping, if you’re a fan of Dora the Explorer.
They’re always portrayed as mischievous little creatures, but in reality, they’re curious, friendly, and love to play!
Different breeds of fox can be found all over North America. From the red foxes who live all over the continent to the snow foxes that stay all the way up in the Arctic. Even though foxes aren’t exactly rare to find, it’s still a fun treat if you catch one using your backyard as a short cut.
When Kenneth Chan looked out on his deck one evening, he didn’t just see one fox, he saw a bunch!
A group of three or four fox pups (or, more accurately known as “kits”) were running and jumping around all over his yard, having a grand old time. So naturally, he grabbed his camera.
Even though it was dark, Kenneth managed to capture some incredible up-close-and-personal footage of these playful little guys doing some late-night exploring.
He is a professional photographer living in Arizona, so his high-grade professional photography equipment allowed him to catch such high-quality night time footage of these lively fox babies. It wouldn’t look quite as nice if you or I tried to capture it on the quality of our iPhones!
Not yet at least, we’ll see what iPhone 12 brings us.
Kenneth wasn’t entirely shocked. He had recently noticed that an entire family of gray foxes decided to share his backyard, move in, and call it home.
The babies usually stay in their den during the day, but they love to come out at night to play.
Some are even cheeky enough to get right up close to the glass door and see what’s going on inside! They’re brave little ones.
As with most baby animals (including human children), they’re just little balls of energy and can’t stop frolicking and playing.
Watching these little kits continue to “attack” each other out of the blue will make you swoon.
They think they’re so tough!
And they’re already used to moving super quickly. Being so quick an quiet is why foxes get their reputation for being sneaky.
And they still haven’t fully developed their spatial awareness or depth perception. They’re not exactly the most coordinated of creatures at this age.
The footage captures the kits jumping from the deck to the ground or the bird feeder, and it’s not always a seamless transition. And none of them seem very keen to help their siblings out when they’re in a bind.
You live and learn, I guess!
Some people worry about what to do when they find wild foxes in their backyards. Especially for pet owners, it can be a bit of a scare and is certainly an unplanned scenario.
But foxes, especially common red or gray foxes like these ones, are nothing to be worried about (how could anyone ever look at that face and worry, though).
Foxes generally get along well with dogs and cats, and still have a strong instinct to avoid people.
So as with most other wildlife, it’s never wise to touch or feed them, but there’s no need to panic or feel afraid. Especially when they’re just playful pups like this… they’re just curious!
On his website, Kenneth talks about how becoming a photographer was a dream come true.
” I’m grateful for each day that I get to do what I love!” – Kenneth Chan
Who wouldn’t love getting to experience and photograph incredible landscapes for a living… especially when it means encountering wildlife like this!
Cynthia here said what we were all thinking. How did Kenneth stop himself from opening that patio door?!
Someone named Heather needed to… restore her manliness? By punching a wall?
I can’t exactly relate but I still understand. This video is too cute and hits you right in the feels in a way you didn’t expect it to.
