Rottweilers may not be the first breed that comes to mind when you think of a cuddly lap doggo.
They’re big, strong, and look kind of mean looking, especially when they start snarling with those big, sharp teeth of theirs!
Those qualities, along with their very protective nature, is actually one of the main reasons people use them as guard dogs. It’s also why some folks may think Rotties and babies are a really bad mix.
But, that’s not always the case!
Some Rottweilers are totally awesome. But actions speak louder than words, right?
So take it from this adorable baby boy, who at 9 months old has already mastered the art of snugging up with his Rottie best friend!
Many parents have mixed feelings about having a big dog around their tiny twinkie. And of course, they’re absolutely right to be concerned. The welfare of their child should always come first!
However, not all larger than life doggos are bad apples.
In fact, a lot of Rotties think and act like cuddly little toy breeds, and would be totally heartbroken if you told them otherwise!
I think we’ve all learned by now that it’s not the type of dog, but how they’ve been raised, trained, and parented that determines how they turn out.
And this good girl has turned out to be a fine example of a goofy, lovable mutt who means no harm.
As you can see in the video, even when she’s being poked and prodded by the curious baby boy, this cute Rottweiler is about as calm and patient as any pooch can be.
Case in point – she’s just chilling and taking an afternoon nap when the little man of the house suddenly starts crawling on all fours toward her bed.
Does she start getting aggressive and bark at him to leave her alone? Nope!
When the little tyke reaches out a hand to pet her, she does what any good grrrrl would do – she lifts her head toward his hands and begs for more of the same!
The American Kennel Club says that Rottweilers are:
“A well-bred and properly raised Rottie will be calm and confident, courageous but not unduly aggressive. The aloof demeanor these world-class guardians present to outsiders belies the playfulness, and downright silliness, that endear Rotties to their loved ones.”
It’s very evident that the friendship these two is both endearing and playful.
Rottweilers have a long history of playing well with non-furry kiddos. But, as the AKC mentions, it’s always important to train them early on.
“Early training and socialization will harness a Rottie’s territorial instincts in a positive way.”
It’s also important for any parent to always supervise their children around dogs, even one as small as a toy Chihuahua. Kids sometimes have a way of not knowing their own strength, which has a way of annoying even the most patient of pets!
Rotties can be clumsy, especially when they’re puppies. But, the good news is that they’re highly trainable, and above all else, they absolutely love their humans!
“Rottweilers are “people dogs” who do not do well isolated from humans and life experiences.”
As you can see by the expression on both their faces, this kiddo and his dog absolutely adore each other.
