Masha is a cat who lives on the streets of Obisink, Russia. She is fed by the residents of the neighborhood, and they even bring her inside when it gets too cold out.

Irna Lavoraa is one of the people who look out for Masha. Irna is a 68 year old home renter in the area. One day, while she was taking out the trash, she heard a strange sound.

The woman recognized the noise as coming from the basement. Masha was meowing away. Irna immediately worried the cat might be hurt, so she ran down the stairs. What she saw shocked her.

Masha had been lying next to an abandoned baby who had been left in a cardboard box. When she saw the child, she snuggled up next to him to keep him warm.

Authorities arrived to rescue the baby, and they concluded that the little boy, who couldn’t have been more than 12 weeks old, had been laying there for several hours. Without the cat’s body heat, the boy surely would not have survived.

Masha’s maternal instincts had kicked in as soon as she saw the baby, and they didn’t stop when the paramedics arrived. Even as the ambulance drove off toward the hospital, the cat was still trying to rescue the child. She ran off after the ambulance, much to the surprise of those on board.

“She was so worried about where we were taking the baby. She ran right behind us, miaowing. She was really a rational creature,” ambulance driver Vera Ivanina explained to the International Business Times.

Once the paramedics were out of sight, the cat returned to the spot where the boy had been taken. She hoped that she would see him again.

Fortunately, the boy is well on his way to recovery. Authorities are still searching for the child’s parents, but at least he is finally safe.

Irna was immensely impressed with the cat’s nurturing tendency. “She is very calm and friendly, so when I heard her mewing, I at first thought she might have hurt herself. But clearly, it was just her maternal instincts taking over and she wanted to protect the child,” the woman explained.

This cat is a real hero. Masha’s heroic rescue is proof of the intimate connection that exists between humans and animals.
