These cats don’t look very similar— but they share a few things in common.
Both kitties reside in Southfield, Michigan, and share the same human: Dr. Will Powers. But, more importantly, they also both hold Guinness World Records. And not just any record—each holds an “all-time” distinction in the official record book.
Arcturus Aldebaran Powers, the majestic Savannah cat, currently holds the title of World’s Tallest Domestic Cat.
When Arcturus was officially measured at only one-year-old, he was more than 19 inches tall! Not only did he beat the former record holder, but he did it before he had even stopped growing!
The two-year-old Savannah cat has lived with Dr. Powers since he was only 2-months-old. He’s clearly grown a lot since those days.
Guinness reports that Arcturus is so big “he eats around a pound-and-a-half of food daily and is so tall he can actually stand at the table.”
According to Fox2 News Detroit, the average cat only stands about 12-13 inches at most. So, Powers says Arcturus’ height is the human equivalent of being about 10 feet tall among his peers!
Arcturus’ brother Cygnus Regulus Powers is a gorgeous, fluffy Maine Coon with an even fluffier tail.
Dr. Powers and his wife Laura had always thought the tail always seemed rather long for the kitty’s size, but they had no idea it was record-breakingly long until Guinness approached them, asking to measure it.
After officials took Cygnus’ numbers, it was confirmed— at 17.58” long, Cygnus has the longest kitty tail in the world!
I’d like to say the competition was close, but it wasn’t. Cygnus beat the previous record holder by more than a full inch.
Because of his long tail, Cygnus can be a bit clumsy. His owners say he’s always dipping his tail into things accidentally, and they have to be careful to not get it shut in doors.
On top of caring for record-breaking kitties, Dr. Powers is also the president of the Ferndale Cat Shelter in Michigan, and has made saving and helping cats a core part of his life. Nowadays, however, he doesn’t do it alone. Arcturus and Cygnus also help homeless kitties by hosting meet-and-greets to help raise donations. “This money has been directly used to provide food, shelter, and good homes to stray and abandoned cats,” Powers said. “Arcturus and Cygnus now can use their fame to help their peers live better, healthier, and longer lives.”
“As you can see, we love our boys,” Powers told Fox2 News Detroit.
“When someone tells you that your cat is ‘the best’ at a particular thing that’s uniquely special, that’s really validation for a cat family.”
