People abandon their pets for all different kinds of reasons, and while they’re generally given quite a bit of stick for doing so, maybe we’re all taking the wrong approach when dealing with this subject.
One California rescue group decided to take another route when addressing the owners of an abandoned dog in their neighborhood and instead decided to pen an open letter to the dog’s owner that was full of understanding and compassion.
The dog had been found along with food, blankets, and a note explaining that she was called Delilah and that she liked to be served her wet and dry food in a particular way.
Since she had been left outside their shelter, the note struck a chord with the California rescue group, who were inspired to write a letter, reassuring Delilah’s current owner that they weren’t judging their actions- and that the dog was going to be okay.
The letter, which they shared onto Facebook, created quite a stir within their community, receiving hundreds of likes and shares when it was posted.
The Letter began:
“We are not here to judge you. That is not our place. We do not know your story and can only imagine the turmoil in your heart when faced with the decision you had to make.
We are not here to judge you. That is not our job. We know there must be so many fond memories and happy times spent together. Endless kisses and hugs. Sharing your secrets knowing they would be safe. A lifetime of love that never lasts long enough.”
“We are not here to judge you. That is not who we are. Right now you are probably wondering if she safe and loved. Right now you are probably wondering if she is warm and fed. Right now you are probably wondering where she will spend her days.
We are here to say thank you. That is our place. Thank you for not leaving her on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. We are here to say thank you. That is our job. Thank you for leaving her with food and blankets and a name. That is so much more than many dogs ever get.”
“We are here to say thank you. That is who we are. Thank you for all of the years you did give her. For all of the love you have shown her. For making the hardest decision that no one ever wants to make.
We want you to know she is safe and loved. We want you to know she is warm and fed. We want you to know she will spend her days with a family that while they won’t be you, will love her as much as you did. We want you to know we see you and we are sorry for the decision you had to make.”
An open letter to Delilah’s Owner.

The rescue center concluded:
“Delilah holds a very special place in our hearts. We are getting her seen by the vet today so we know how to best care for her. If you would like to donate to her medical and comfort needs you can do so through…”
They then included a link to their PayPal account, and the post made an amazing $848 in total!
We’re so glad that Delilah is now safe at Sweet Home Doberman Rescue, and we hope that she finds herself a new, loving home very soon!
