Arguments are a natural part of relationships. The important thing is finding out how to compromise and get over your anger after the fact! Does that reasoning work with angry dogs as well?
While dogs can’t talk to humans like other humans can, they aren’t dumb!
Dogs have an amazing ability to remember and learn from past mistakes. Often, dogs who are taken off the street need an adjustment time to learn to trust humans again, especially if they were abused. They learned the lesson that “humans hurt me” and needed someone to help them unlearn it!
The great part is that dogs don’t hold grudges well.
Humans can hold a grudge their entire lives. It usually isn’t the healthiest course of action, but we do it anyway! Dogs, however, seem to be a bit more forgiving. Even when they get mad at you, you can usually do something to help them get over their temporary anger.
Mya is a husky that recently experienced the ultimate betrayal from her owner.
What was this horrible sin that was committed against Mya the dog? Flea spray. Her human mom decided that it was time to respray her to help keep the fleas off! To Mya, however, this was the worst thing that her mom could have done. How could she betray her like this?
It looks like we have a classic situation of “mama knows best”!
Like most situations, mom seems to know that the temporary discomfort (and smell) of the flea spray is worth it in the long run. Mya doesn’t really care, though! She is still mad all the same, just like a pouting toddler.
If only there were a way to make her happy again…
What is the oldest trick in the book that moms use to comfort their kids? Singing them a song! You can’t be mad when your mom is singing you your favorite song! The only thing we don’t know is if that trick works on dogs as well. Its wat least worth a try!
Mom starts singing, gently and softly.
As a test, Mya’s mom calls her name before she starts singing. She won’t even turn her head to look at her! The situation looks bleak. This song thing better work. Mom starts singing “The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow,” which happens to be Mya’s favorite song.
Soon, the pouty little dog that is Mya lets starts to sing along!
Still angry, Mya softens up a bit and starts to sing with her mom. As her mom keeps singing, we learn that Mya really can’t resist the song! Once her mom got her singing, forgiveness was surely on the way.
With a few more verses, her stubborn head starts to swing around!
Finally, Mya caves in and turns to howl with her mom the final lines of the song! It looks like singing is a great way to make a grump husky happy again. What works for human kids seems to work for dog babies as well.
