In July 2014, Petaluma Animal Services in California took in a litter of six ginger kittens.
Petaluma Animal Services sent the kittens to different foster homes. Two of the kitten brothers, Ozzie and Butter, were paired off together. The kittens became very bonded, and they spent most of their time cuddling together.
When Cathleen Cavin and her daughter Cali saw the kittens, they decided they wanted to adopt one.
Cali asked her mother if they could adopt both kittens. Cavin wanted to, but she knew her landlord would not allow them to have two cats. So, Cavin and her daughter went home with Ozzie, leaving Butter behind.
Cavin, Cali, and Ozzie were all heartbroken to leave Butter.
“We’re crying as we’re leaving,” Cavin told The Press Democrat, “just devastated that we couldn’t take both. They look absolutely identical.”
Over the next few days, Ozzie whimpered from time to time. Cavin guessed that he was missing his brother, and she decided she would talk to her landlord and try to adopt Butter. But when Cavin called the shelter, she learned that Butter had been adopted four days after Ozzie.
Cavin didn’t think she’d ever seen Butter again. But then, a surprising twist of fate happened.
In April 2015, Cavin began chatting with a man named Brian Herrera on a dating app.
As they talked, they realized their lives had taken similar paths. They were both born in the Bay Area, they had attended the same concerts, and they both had cats. The two chatted for months, and then, in June 2016, Herrera asked Cavin out. At first, Cavin wasn’t sure if she wanted to go, but she decided to give it a try.
The two went out to dinner and quickly hit it off. Afterward, they went for drinks at Herrera’s house. And there, Cavin saw a startling sight.
Cavin spotted a white and ginger cat. The cat was completely identical to her Ozzie!
“I start looking at the cat, and I’m like, ‘That’s my cat. You have my cat,’” Cavin said. “And he’s like, ‘No, that’s my cat.’ So he thought I was some crazy cat lady, and I said, ‘No, I promise you. Come over to my house.’”
Herrera went over to Cavin’s house the next day, and he was shocked to see that her cat was identical to his. They compared adoption paperwork, and Cavin realized that Herrera was the person who adopted Butter! Cavin couldn’t believe it.
“This is the twin brother I told my daughter I’d been searching for forever,” she said.
On Valentine’s Day 2017, Ozzie and Butter saw each other for the first time in almost two-and-a-half years.
The brothers recognized each other instantly, and they quickly began playing together. The cats were so happy to be together!
On March 1, 2017, Herrera, Cavin, and their daughters moved in together. Today, the happy couple is still together, and their cats love living under the same roof. We’re so glad that these two cat siblings have been reunited!
