This is Sandy. She’s a 10-year-old pit bull mix looking for her forever home.
She was dropped off at the Knox County Humane Society (KCHS) Animal Shelter in Galesburg, Illinois, by her previous owner, who had become sick and had to relocate to Florida.
“She is such an amazing dog who has lots of spunk and energy left in her. Sandy is the most happiest when getting to be around people and getting loved on,” the shelter described Sandy.
Like any animal shelter, the staff wants to find Sandy her forever home ASAP. But, despite their efforts, she has still been living in the shelter for a year with no potential adopters.

It all changed when the KCHS Animal Shelter director, Erin Buckmaster, posted a special video of Sandy on their Facebook page.
Since she arrived, there is a special ritual she receives from the staff every night before bed.
“Since being here, Sandy has picked up the routine of getting tucked in every night,” the shelter shared. “It is something that has become an almost every night thing that she looks forward to.”

Erin recently noticed this ritual on the surveillance camera and thought it was the most adorable ritual.
“It was just touching, and Sandy is so sweet,” Erin added. “She’s been there for a year, so I would love if she could get adopted.”
Keneshia Martin is the staff member who took the time every night to tuck Sandy into bed.
“I think it was just something she was used to at her previous home,” Keneisha Martin told HuffPost. “She just does it.”
She recorded it and uploaded it on their Facebook page and it blew up.
And it was exactly what Sandy needed.
The adorable video was viewed and shared thousands of times, and the shelter received so many calls and inquiries about adopting Sandy. Erin, Keneisha, and the shelter were thrilled!
Their hope and dream for Sandy to get adopted was finally going to come true soon!
It was a challenge to get Sandy adopted.
Being 10 years old and a Pit Bull made it doubly hard to find her forever home. People want puppies and cute dogs.
But they were determined to have Sandy adopted, especially since Sandy is very sweet and friendly to everybody.
The video became the catalyst for Sandy to find her forever home.
They wanted her to be adopted by a family with older children, seven years old and up, and no cats. And do you know what? The shelter got so many calls from potential adopters all the way from Texas, Florida, and even Canada.
They eventually picked a local family, whose dog had recently passed away. They met the mother when she went to the shelter to donate supplies.

She wasn’t ready to adopt another dog just yet but when she met Sandy, she knew Sandy had to come home with her and she did.
And for even more good news, four more dogs were adopted on that day.
Erin hopes videos like this will encourage more and more people to adopt their next pets instead of buying at stores and breeders. If you’d like to see the video of Sandy being tucked in and learn more about Knox Humane Society, head here.
