And even if it did, bats aren’t what caused it to spread throughout the world. That one’s on humans.
Still, we tend not to think of bats as very “cute.” And they’re easy to be afraid of when they fly by with those giant wings.
But the reality is that upon closer inspection, those tiny bat faces are actually kind of adorable.
And bats aren’t really dive-bombing anyone, they just need to take a dip before they soar higher.
In the end, they’re pretty misunderstood creatures. That’s why the folks at Bats Queensland, a volunteer organization for flying foxes & microbats in Australia, are using Instagram to show us a whole other side of them.
Click ahead and take a look at the sweet faces of the animals we’re so quick to think of as “flying rats.”
The rescuers prefer the term “sky puppies”- and you might too after seeing these little creatures!
1. Pepper
Bats Queensland takes in bats in bad shape and rehabilitates them until they’re ready to be set free.
They urged fans to do their part by keeping pets inside at night so that nocturnal creatures could have their time as well.
2. Mounty
She was foraging in a shrub when she was sniffed out.
Luckily, she got to the hospital in time to be saved.
3. This little orphan
He was rendered motherless by the bushfires and heatwaves that struck southern Australia.
Luckily, he’s got someone to take care of him until he’s ready to fly free.
4. Krumpet
He got caught in a barbed-wire fence and got a bad wing injury.
But last we heard he was recovering well, despite getting a mouth injury as well in the accident.
5. Cindy
Bats Queensland says you can tell when bats are in need of better nutrition by the lack of pigment in the fur around their eyes.
They think her desperation for food is why she was flying low enough to get caught in a cattle fence.
6. Friday
Friday rammed its head into a glass high-rise building and is recovering from the trauma.
There’s just something about those eyes that draws us in!
7. Dobby
What an incredible photo of the little guy!
He looks like he’s wearing a little cloak.
8. Seren
It takes a lot of work to get these babies the nutrition they need to thrive without a mother, but volunteers are dedicated to doing their best.
We would be too if we saw this sweet girl in need of help.
9. Layla
The grey-headed flying fox was found hanging on a gutter on her own.
When these bats are away from their colony and need help, it’s best to call a rescue organization rather than try to approach the animal yourself.
10. Clipper
She was rescued after getting her thumbnail wedged into a fence and was patient and thankful throughout her rescue and recovery.
The staff misses her a lot, but they know the best place for these animals is out in the wild, if they can survive there.
11. Capella
Capella is an adventurous little guy found abandoned on the ground and covered in ants.
Rescuers not only mended a hole in his wing and bite marks on his body, but took care of him through a bout of pneumonia and a finger amputation!
Apparently, he loved stomach tickles – and that alone makes us think about bats in a completely different way.
12. Bette
This little girl loves cuddles and head rubs and was just 7 days old when she was rescued.
13. Electra
How could you not find a place in your heart for this face?!
14. Evans
Luckily, they got to him in time so that his injuries were minimal and rescuers were confident there would be a good outcome.
15. This baby
We cannot.
The tiny bit of apple in this baby’s mouth…the fact that it doesn’t mind being held like an ice cream cone.
It’s too much cuteness.
16. Gary
Rescuers were surprised when he didn’t budge an inch during his checkup.
He looks like he wants a hug!
We’d give him one.
17. Angie
She was underweight and malnourished but was responding well to treatment and gaining weight quickly.
This little girl looks pretty grateful to her rescuers.
18. Lauren
We didn’t even know bats could stick out their tongues!
And while a bat tongue doesn’t sound like it would be cute, this photo sure proves otherwise.
19. Wilemina & Wilma
Just look at those tiny baby bat ears!
20. Pantaloons
But Pantaloons hugging a teddy bear?
That hit us right in the feels.
21. Mouse
And the grey-headed flying fox really got torn up. She injured her mouth as well while trying to bite the fence in a panicked bid to free herself.
22. Guava
The rescue recommended that special mesh be used instead because any netting that you can poke your finger through is a risk to all sorts of wildlife.
23. Betsy
But the black flying fox was rescued in time to be able to recover from her injuries.
24. Dani
We don’t know her story but her “ferocious” little bat wing was enough to make us say a surprising “aww.”
25. Fallen
Poor little guy looks like he got a good bonk on the nose. And if you scroll through his photos above you can see that he was a very good boy while getting his wing dressing changed.
26. Hamish
It’s up to farmers and passersby to call wounded bats into the rescue, for which they’re always grateful.
Imagine the damage these adorable creatures do to themselves when they panic while trying to get free.
27. Grace
But it looks like everything is ok and she warded off an infection.
Her fur will eventually grow back and she’ll be set free when she heals up.
28. Bandit
The heat in Australia really affects the food sources for bats – and when that happens they end up foraging much closer to the ground where there’s all sorts of trouble.
Bandit was one of many juveniles to come in during one such heatwave.
29. This sleepy critter
Although, upon close inspection, it could just be opening up wide waiting for the food to come.
We’re just glad this cute little critter is getting fed.
30. Charlie & Cece
They’re cute as can be while they get their treatment and wait to be released back into the wild.
31. Ashley
Bats Queensland keeps injured bats in their care for a few weeks in order to assess their injuries.
In Ashley’s case, it took a few days for the full extent to become apparent so she could be properly treated.
32. Billy
When orphans are released into the wild, they usually weigh almost 1 pound.
Billy only weighed .39 pounds when he arrived but was putting on weight like a champ.
33. Those toofers!
But they don’t want to hurt anyone. And now that we see what it’s all about, we certainly have no fear.
34. Boo
It’s incredible how these cute creatures let humans care for them so closely.
35. Daniel
Luckily, security knew something was wrong and called the rescue instead of trying to get ahold of him themselves.
Now Daniel has a chance of being released as good as new.
Come to think of it, he WAS pretty lucky!
36. Chitter Chatter
Sadly, the account got hacked and they had to start over again, but it was easy to build their following back up with creatures as cute as this.
37. Darcy
But in that second photo, she almost looks like she’s smiling, so we’re glad the rescue posted these anyway!
38. Little One
And while he doesn’t have the big, soulful eyes of the flying foxes, he’s pretty darn cute as he learns to eat his mealworms!
Frankly, that’s not a sentence we ever thought we would write.
39. Tess
We like her little Dracula-like stance, though if she’s trying to be fearsome she’s failing epically.
40. Horatio
The rescue raised him from infancy, and watching him grow seemed to be a true honor for his caretakers.
41. Rascal
The rescuers think that Rascal flew a bit too far away from his colony when he ended up alone and confused on someone’s deck.
Luckily, those folks knew who to call.
42. Gibbo
He got the all-clear and wasn’t injured, so we assume he was allowed to go on his merry way once they knew he was nourished enough to keep caring for himself.
43. Lucy
It’s sweet to see people care so much for these tiny beings and do what’s best for them to get back out into the wild.
But it must be hard to let these cuties go sometimes!
44. Look at me!
And we would be scared if we just saw him out in the wild like that.
But now that we know to look at that cute face though, we’ll be sure to back away while giving them a little wink next time.
45. Mr. Battie Bat
The rescue was intent on making sure this cheeky guy was well-nourished after they saw the rings around his eyes indicating a dietary deficiency.
It’s not wise to get close enough to a wild bat to take a look, but there’s a lot you can learn just from scrolling through Bats Queensland’s Instagram account.
How about you?
Of course, that doesn’t mean you should ever approach or touch a bat or try to keep one as a pet! Just appreciate them for the adorable “sky puppies” that are instead of thinking of them as diseased flying rats.
