Dogs love attention. They have close relationships with their humans, and they don’t like to be left alone for long periods of time. They also get bored easily. One dog found a way to sneakily use his toys to get people to play with him.
The dog would climb up the wall around his yard and throw his toys out on the sidewalk anytime he saw someone walk by.
The people would pick up the toys and toss them back over the fence, and then the dog would do it again.
Johnny Berchtold, an actor from Los Angeles, California, filmed the neighborhood dog named Riley while he performed his trick. He posted the video and said:
“This good wall-doggo dropped his ballo but fear not I returned it to him and thanked him for his service.”
Riley is so excited about playing with other people that his owners had to put a placemat on the fence, so he doesn’t hurt himself.
They are usually off at work when Riley is outside being social, but Berchtold is around to see his crazy tricks. He said:
“Early September, my two good friends Tom and Nicole were getting married, so I spent a lot of time around their apartment. One morning, we were waiting outside of their place for the wedding event of the day, and I saw Riley from a distance.”
Berchtold couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
At first, he just thought it was a one-time thing, but the more he watched Riley, the more he saw him doing it. Eventually, he realized that the dog was just hoping someone would play with him. He decided to videotape him one day. He said:
“I obviously freaked out, because the sight of him was just strikingly cute. I didn’t even realize he had a ball in his mouth until I started filming him… It was quite obvious that he expected someone to lend him a hand because he looked directly at me and waited there until someone came to his rescue.”
Berchtold posted the video on Twitter, and it was retweeted by WeRateDogs. It also received 45,000 retweets on the website. Berchtold couldn’t believe how popular it was. He added:
“Apparently, he is very popular in the neighborhood, and nearly everyone knows him as the friendly neighborhood dog.”
He said that Riley really is a special dog.
He loves attention and making new friends. He is well cared for by his owners; he just wants to meet and play with everyone who happens to walk by his fence. Berchtold added:
“Sometimes when you pet him while he’s on the ledge, he wraps his arms around you so you won’t stop or leave.”
Berchtold hasn’t seen Riley for a while, but he does plan on making a trip to the neighborhood to see his friends and the dog. He has a feeling Riley will be in his usual spot when he arrives. He said:
“I haven’t seen the dog since, but Tom and Nicole see him daily. I’m excited to go pay him a visit so I can let him know that all of the internet wants to play ball with him.”
Now that Riley has become famous and everyone knows where to find him, visitors are coming to spend time with him.
People are posing with Riley and stopping by to pick up his toys and toss them to him over the fence. Riley isn’t as lonely as he used to be. He is a local celebrity, and everyone wants to play with this pup.
Berchtold is glad that Riley is making friends and doesn’t feel so lonely.
He never expected his video to make the dog famous, but he is happy that Riley is getting some attention. He added:
“I’m psyched, considering that Riley deserves all of the love. It’s just one of those things that I am happy is out in the world to inspire a smile.”
