A showdown looms on the horizon…

In the icy bitterness of the Antarctic, very few species are capable of withstanding the frigid climate and harsh natural environment. From the average human eye, it appears to be a desolate, barren wasteland with nothing but chills and frostbite. Upon closer inspection, however, we see a vicious struggle for survival occurring in almost every corner of the continent.

Whether brute strength or fancy finesse, many adaptations are neutralized out amid the frigid Antarctic. Some, like the Emperor Penguins, try their absolute best to brave the seemingly impossible conditions.

In a snippet of the surprising “Spy in the Snow” by the BBC, we observe a pack of Emperor Penguins enduring their harsh environment. The penguins move in a huddled formation and brush together to generate internal body heat, intelligently keeping themselves warm. They work incredibly well together, literally depending on each other for survival.

All jokes aside, if our world leaders had half the social skills these penguins do, COVID-19 would surely be fading away! Maybe world hunger, too.

Instead, we live in a world where a menacing petrel whirls down in front of our dear penguin protagonists. Look out!

Petrels are known to be aggressive and opportunistic. They’re considered to be the primary scavengers of the Antarctic. They devour albatross, whale carrion, seal, and you guessed it, penguins.

One small penguin loses its balance atop the ice, soon met by a blinding fast attack by the lurking petrel. The petrel jumps at the opportunity, smashing the penguin’s face into the ice.

Hey, that’s not nice!

Immediately, the pack responds with a rallying fervor, proceeding to protect their defenseless comrade.

The penguins huddle into a circle and begin to formulate their battle tactics. Suddenly, the petrel strikes with even more ferocity.

In a flash, the penguins repel their foe by squawking threats and shrieks through their sharp beaks. But the relentless petrel persists, engaging its prey again. With each strike comes a counter.

The joust continues for quite some time.

In the end, absolutely nothing’s gained on either side. Instead, we’re left with a tense, drawn-out staredown reminiscent of classic Western films. At this point, it looks like time’s ticking for the Emperor pack. Who knows how long they can keep up their noble defenses.

Then suddenly, almost out of thin air, a new challenger approaches.

Like a thief in the night, an Adélie penguin dashes to the group’s aid.

The BBC commentator describes the Adélie penguin as, “The feistiest penguin in the world.” He’s definitely right.

The dark, stocky bird appears ready to let the mean petrol absolutely have it. As he approaches the group, the aviary assailant skedaddles into the distance, away from the party of penguins. The petrel seemed pretty spooked. I would be too.

Not today!

The victors share a brief moment of respite. Unfortunately, many more petrels will likely cross their path at some point. For now, it’s a moment to cherish life itself and narrowly escaping the loss of a dear, dear friend.

The penguins prove that even in the harshest of climates, nothing can break their will to survive. We bid farewell to our young penguin travelers. May they always keep their cool. See what I did there?
