They say “birds of a feather flock together,” but when it comes to doggos, what does one abused shelter pup say to another abused shelter pup?
In this case, barking at each other wasn’t necessary.
This is the heartwarming moment an abused shelter dog reached out with his paw and comforted a 4-month-old puppy who was shot in the head and left for dead.
Cute little Sammie was a harmless 4-month-old boxer puppy who would never hurt anyone! Sadly, he subjected to a gut-wrenching case of animal cruelty.
Someone spray-painted him blue, shot him in the head with a .22-caliber rifle, and then dragged him behind a car before leaving him for dead.
What level of crazy does it take to even do this to a sweet ‘lil pupper?
When he was finally saved by Rescue Dogs Rock NYC, Sammie was very much in critical condition. He was immediately rushed to nearby Paws & Claws Animal Clinic in Columbia, South Carolina for emergency treatment.
The vets discovered that, in addition to his obvious head injury, one of Sammie’s back legs was crushed, and his front leg would need a skin graft.
Nicole Jones, a vet tech at where he was being treated, told The Daily News:
“His rear leg is stabilized and we are hoping the bone that was literally dragged off will have enough growth to salvage the leg. It will take months until we can let him even try to use that leg again without a brace. He is in great spirits and is the sweetest baby!”
Even when Sammie was feeling blue, making new friends was easy!
Simon, a 1-year-old border collie, knows exactly what it’s like to be abused. He was being treated at the same vet center for a bad case of mange.
When he was let out of his kennel, Simon went straight to the X-ray table Sammie was lying on, and offered his paw in friendship, as if to say: “I know what you’re going through. I’m here for you little guy!”
Everyone should already know this by name, but this just shoes that animals do indeed have feelings!
Thankfully, Sammie was one tough little pooch, and he managed to survive the terrible ordeal!
Although it’s hard to look at Sammie’s injuries, he came out of surgery like a super trooper!
His physical wounds healed in time, and with a loving forever family that will surely adopt him, the emotional trauma he suffered will hopefully fade away in time.
Lots of cuddles and kisses have a way of making dogs forget about the bad things!
After a few weeks of being closely monitored by the vet, Sammie got the okay to recover at “home” in the care of a medical foster family. His head wounds have mostly healed, and his skin graft is also well on its way to recovering nicely.
The gentle smile in Sammie’s eyes says that he’s happy to have been rescued and in the care of so many loving people!
The compassion expressed by animals is something we should all aspire to.
Feelings and compassion aren’t just human emotions. It’s clear to see that dogs can find comfort and empathy in each other’s company when they find themselves in the same boat.
Simon did a wonderful thing by offering a loving paw when Sammie needed it the most!
