Osito found himself on his own at a young age.

The puppy was dropped off at a shelter after his previous owners decided that they didn’t want the responsibility of taking care of him.

But thankfully there were others that did and Osito was taken in by Felicia Quispe Arana.

The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) recently did a study to identify the top 10 reasons people give up their dogs to shelters.

These reasons include:

  1. Moving (7%)
  2. Landlord not allowing pet (6%)
  3. Too many animals in household (4%)
  4. Cost of pet maintenance (5%)
  5. Owner having personal problems (4%)
  6. Inadequate facilities (4%)
  7. No homes available for litter mates (3%)
  8. Having no time for pet (4%)
  9. Pet illness(es) (4%)
  10. Biting (3%)

“These commonalities suggest that there may be similar ways to address relinquishment in dogs and cats,” NCPPSP President Pam Burney told PetFinder. “For people who work in a shelter all day, there isn’t always time to look at these issues. We have impressions of what’s happening, but now we have objective data that will help us develop specific programs to address the issues that have been identified.”

Arana, who runs a shelter for homeless dogs in Cusco, Peru, called Colitas Sin Techo, didn’t mention why Osito had been surrendered.

There are a lot of older dogs at the shelter so Arana was a little wary of how Osito would fit in, being a puppy and all.

“There are no puppies at our shelter. All the dogs are big and most of them are adults,” Arana told The Dodo.

“I didn’t know how they’d react to Osito when they met him.”

As it turns out, Arana had absolutely nothing to worry about.

The other doggos welcomed Osito with open arms, even though he was a little apprehensive at first.

“At first, Osito was intimidated by the sight of so many large dogs,” Arana said.

But that all melted away when he saw how happy they were to see him.

“[After meeting the other dogs], he felt comfortable and walked around with great confidence.”

Osito’s introduction was actually caught on video.

It shows the little puppo laying in the dirt when the bigger dogs start to surround him.

They are all super friendly and seem to be welcoming him and wanting to come over so they could say, “Hi!”

They start sniffing him up and down and definitely got all up in his personal space. But they did so in a gentle way.

And little Osito didn’t seem to mind because those sniffs soon turned into lots of kisses.

And Osito looked pretty happy about it. Osito ended up making a lot of new friends at the shelter. But that didn’t last for long either.

That’s because Osito was adopted into a forever home.

“[We were] able to find a person who ended up adopting him,” Arana said. “Now he has a family, and I hope he has a long life and is happy.”

She hopes that his shelter friends will soon all find new homes too. You can check out the gang and their happy welcoming of Osito in the video below.
