Being a pet owner is truly challenging. It is a commitment that you can’t get rid of anytime you want.
No matter what kind of animal you are taking care of, it’s a responsibility that you need to uphold from the moment you made the decision to get a pet.
If this is the case for fur parents, imagine the duties you’re charged with when you run a rescue organization.
It’s sure not a walk in the park. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy it.
Mariah Hillman, a woman who runs an organization that rescues pigeons, ducks, and chickens, can attest to this.
She loves what she does, and many of the stories that she shared about the birds she takes care of are inspiring and heartwarming.
Mariah shared the story of her adorable duck, Gertrude.
In an interview with The Dodo, she revealed that Gertrude suffered from disabilities. She was abandoned and couldn’t walk.
According to the veterinarian, the bones in Gertrude’s legs “are like sugar.” Thus, it sounds impossible for her to walk or even stand.
But this adorable duck worked so hard and has proven that nothing is impossible.
Mariah provided her with a wheelchair, and that was her best friend whenever she practiced using her legs. She loves to tap and move fast, even she is in a wheelchair.
You can tell how eager she was to walk and stand when you watch him.
Mariah and her family took Gertrude when they went hiking.
Little did they know that they were about to see the results of the duck’s hard work in practicing walking and standing.
During their trip, they let her do enjoyable things like dipping into the water while she is in a floaty. While on a leash, she also tried to crawl while she was on the water.
She was having fun!
It shows the way she blabs “quack, quack, quack” in the morning. She was also comfortable and at ease spending time with Mariah and the whole family.
Although she couldn’t walk, she kept on trying to do so. This cute creature is indeed an inspiration.
The heartwarming moment that made Mariah emotional.
That was the time when Gertrude tried to stand up, and she successfully did it.
“Look who’s standing up,” Mariah said excitedly.
Gertrude indeed put a lot of effort into practicing, and it paid off. Thanks to Mariah for guiding and helping her as well.
Moreover, it’s heartwarming how Mariah celebrated Gertrude’s achievement. You can feel that she is genuinely happy for her.
Gertrude found her home.
She may have had an awful past, but it’s a relief that she was rescued by Mariah and Lofty Hopes, who have big hearts for birds like her.
Through the said organization, she was also able to meet Duckleberry Finn, another duck that was rescued and found in the middle of a desert.
Just like Gertrude, he also couldn’t walk at first. But he was able to do so when he saw Gertrude.
It’s safe to say that Gertrude is living her best life, and she undoubtedly deserves it.
