When police officers in San Antonio found Hamish the Cocker Spaniel, they were completely shocked. The dog was covered in more than six pounds of matted fur—he didn’t even look like a dog.
Police officers found little Hamish in the middle of a busy road, struggling to get to safety. The officers immediately brought Hamish to San Antonio Animal Care Services for badly-needed medical care.
The vets at San Antonio Animal Care Services shaved off the matted fur that was weighing Hamish down. Once they finished shaving him, he looked like a whole new dog!
The vets realized that Hamish was severely underweight—he only weighed around 12 pounds when he should have weighed over 20. Most of his teeth were rotten, and so the pup underwent dental surgery. By the end of the surgery, poor Hamish only had 11 teeth left.
While Hamish was recovering, San Antonio Animal Care Services posted about him on their Facebook page.
The post caught the attention of Cocker Spaniel Rescue of Austin/San Antonio. The rescue group said they would take Hamish in and continue caring for him. San Antonio Animal Care Services agreed, and soon, Hamish was on his way to his new foster home.
Hamish quickly settled into his new foster home. He loved his foster parents, and he also got along well with his foster sister. Even though he’d been through so much, Hamish was still as sweet as could be!
Cocker Spaniel Rescue’s biggest priority was getting Hamish to gain weight. But this was tough since Hamish had so few teeth left:
“[Hamish] will be eating soft food and supplements to help him gain weight slowly and in a healthy way. It’s a bit of a slow recovery for this little guy but he is hanging in there!” Cocker Spaniel Rescue wrote on Facebook.
Cocker Spaniel Rescue carefully monitored how much food Hamish was eating. Slowly but surely, he began gaining weight. The little pup was on the road to recovery!
“No doubt about it, his previous humans failed him,” Cocker Spaniel Rescue said. “He still needs a bit of a touch-up, but you can tell how much better he already feels! He is now a CSRA kid and will be getting the medical care he needs to get him ready to find his new forever home. Welcome to the family, Hamish!”
As Hamish started feeling better, his playful personality began coming out.
Hamish loves running around his foster home with his siblings. He also enjoys exploring his house and cuddling with his dad. But more than anything, Hamish loves pizza!
Hamish will stay with Cocker Spaniel Rescue for a few more weeks until he’s fully recovered from his ordeal. Then, Cocker Spaniel Rescue will put the sweet dog up for adoption. After all he has been through, Hamish deserves to go to the perfect forever home!
