The Discovery of ‘Baby Girl’

Kylie Rose Engelhardt found this dog on the corner of E Walnut and Clay Streets in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The dog named Baby Girl was tied securely to a fire hydrant, so it won’t run off and get hit by a car. There was also a backpack full of dog goodies and a note from its old owner.

She posted photos of the dog’s situation on her Facebook account. She called the police to help her identify the owner but hoped that someone from her network would recognize the poor dog.

An hour had passed, and no one was claiming Baby Girl. Kylie sat down beside her to keep her calm and warm, yet got no update from people. She called the Wisconsin Humane Society to help Baby Girl as a last resort.

The Internet’s Quick Judgement

Kylie’s purpose of posting it online was to raise awareness and hopefully find the owner. But it got some mixed reactions for the users.

Most of them quickly judged that the owner was heartless by leaving Baby Girl like that. However, in most stories, these people didn’t know that what the owner did was only to save the poor dog.

Wisconsin Humane Society Saved the Day

Wisconsin Humane Society took care of Baby Girl. They recognized the unknown owner’s backlash from some netizens who read Kylie’s post. Quite a few said that she was heartless to leave the dog like that.

However, WHS understood the story and posted an open letter to the previous owner. It was well-written and full of love and compassion. It was not defending the owner from the people who were angry at her but to shed light on these difficult situations.

“We are so sorry you had to part with your best friend. It’s evident just how much you loved her, and we can see you did your best while struggling with your own medical complications and challenges of life,” they wrote in their Facebook post.

An Owner’s Love

So, here’s Baby Girl’s real story and probably what that note contained. ABC News 13 reached out to her previous owner and explained her decision to leave her best friend that way.

Baby Girl’s former owner lived on the street, and she treated her dog as her best friend. However, she was diagnosed with cancer and had to undergo chemotherapy. With her situation and all the possible expenses, she wanted to give her up to a shelter so she would be safe.

However, she said she called around seven shelters, but none could take Baby Girl in. Leaving her beloved dog tied to a fire hydrant was her last resort hoping that somebody would find her and give her the life she deserved.

“It was the worst. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. She was my life, but I know she’s going to be in a better place. I do. I hope she finds a fantastic family. She deserves it,” the former owner said, who wanted to remain anonymous.

WHS said that it showed how much she loved Baby Girl. She was left with no choice, and people shouldn’t judge her the way they did. The shelter also promised to find a new family for Baby Girl.
