Sure, they’re basically small ponies with significantly more drool, but these gentle giants are wonderful pets (as well as sweet, big babies).
Despite being one of the largest dog breeds in the world, Great Danes are convinced they are lap dogs. In fact, if it’s even remotely allowed, they’ll climb right into bed with you and insist that there’s room for you both.
And while it’s hard to make room in your home for these big goofballs, it’s easy to make room in your heart when you spend some time with one.
We’ve collected as many photos as we could find of these sweet doggos – in particular, those that show just how big they get or cozy they like to get with their humans (and their humans’ furniture)!
1. Size differences
Will they eat it in one bite? Step on it?
But the truth is, they’re pretty darn gentle and there’s plenty a Dane and kitten that have become best friends. (Though you do have to teach smaller things to stay out from underfoot.)
2. Smiling for selfies
These guys will be happy to go jowl to cheek with you though – they just love being next to humans. And it makes them the perfect selfie partner.
I trained my Great Dane to take selfies with me – if I’m sitting and extend my arm with my phone in hand, she plops up next to me, leans, and gives the camera this look 😊 from r/aww
3. You’ve got a friend
See, we told you they were sweethearts.
And this sweet white pup gets to rely on something just as big and strong as it is to keep it out of harm’s way.
4. Fur cushion
They’re also wonderfully chill and will be happy to sit and watch TV with you.
If you’re small enough, they’ll be like a body pillow, happy to accommodate you however you want to lay on them (if they’ve been trained well, of course).
5. Malfunction
And when they end up in odd positions, it’s 10x funnier since they’re so big.
Just remember to check the assembly instructions on your dog before trying to put it together!
6. The one and only!
But where’s the van? Did he go out for Scooby snacks alone?
7. Coffee clatch
(Those big bodies do need a soft, comfy place to lay after all.)
This is one of the larger Great Danes out there, but it looks perfectly willing to hang out and sip coffee with mom.
8. Why you so smol?
Every now and then a Dane gets freaked out by a puppy (who doesn’t? those things are made of energy and yapping!).
But notice that he’s not aggressive – he has the size advantage but has managed to back up and let the pup check HIM out.
9. Everything fits in their mouths
All fair game for a Great Dane’s huge mouth.
But like any other dog, you just have to train them to play with what’s appropriate. And, of course, you’ll be buying MUCH bigger dog toys!
10. Like a deer, but goofier
Of course, should you actually meet a deer, your Dane might be thrown for a loop.
We’re not sure what happened here, but it’s hilarious.
11. They melt
They’re so cute when they’re not full of drool.
If you think this is funny you should see one turn upside down to sleep!
12. Sentinel
It’s like he knows he’s the perfect puppy and is going to be a show dog someday (at least outside the U.S. where they don’t tape their ears for show).
And those paws! He’s going to be huge!
13. So much face
And when these dogs get the zoomies – boy, you better watch out and give them some space!
Their bodies don’t move all in the same direction when they run and turn corners.
14. The look of love
And, frankly, how could you deny this totally stunned “OMG, you have a carrot, can I HAVE a carrot?!” look?
Of course, they make this face about most foods, but a carrot you can usually share.
15. Snuggle space
And the size difference between mom and kiddos is something to behold. It only lasts a few weeks before they’re the size of plenty of other full-grown dogs, so enjoy puppyhood while it lasts!
16. Car pony
Of course, as with any dog, they should be taught how to behave in a crate for car rides to cut down on their chances of injury.
Hitting the breaks and having your big dog slip can have terrible consequences.
17. Lapdog
Just look at this big baby. She should make one of those beeping noises that trucks do when she backs up.
Then again, you come to expect this anyway if you have a Dane – no warning required.
18. Storytime
They might not always behave when you tell them to do something, but when they’re ready to sit still they’ll certainly pretend to listen to your stories.
19. Pawsitively giant
And those claws? Get out the Dremel! Those can’t be groomed with regular clippers or a file – you need power tools or else you’ll have a tap dancer on your hands.
20. Learning how to dog
Sure, he’s sitting upright, but he doesn’t even know that as a Great Dane you need to take up every square inch of space you can.
He’ll learn.
21. Loveseat for one
A chair is too small.
They’ll happily take the couch, but you need somewhere for the family to sit!
22. What are you lookin’ at?
They’ll even cuddle – AND be gentle about it.
How sweet are these two (although the cat looks like it got drunk last night and is waking up somewhere it didn’t expect)?
23. Find your own chair
But when they’re just sitting around for a chat, they’ll gladly take the chair.
24. With age comes wisdom
It’s hard to see them age and get frail so quickly, especially at their size.
It’s the only downside to having a great, big dog.
My old girl Darma. She’s a 10-year-old great Dane, but no one has told her yet. Her eyes may be cloudy and hip a little stiff but her heart is as big as ever. She’s got plenty of love for all of Reddit. I hope she makes your day, just like she does for me every day. from r/aww
25. The old sage
For some reason, many Danes are perfectly fine to have something over their heads (whereas other dogs will shake it off).
It’s not an intelligence thing (as some people claim) – it could be that there’s more surface area and they like to be warm, or they don’t even notice it at all because it’s so light.
Our 9 1/2 year old Great Dane Pearl by the fire last night…she was shivering so she got a blanket! from r/aww
26. Lucky 13
Most Dane owners can only dream of being so lucky.
That’s a lot of years of the best companionship ever.
This is Lady. She just got a clean bill of health from the vet, she’s a 13 year old great dane. She’s not a good girl, she’s the best girl <3 from r/aww
27. Paws to grow into
And this guy looks like you better get that loveseat ready sooner rather than later!
28. Small dog, big dreams
Always enjoy puppyhood while you can.
Remembering when they were small will make you smile while you’re cleaning up after them as adults.
29. Growth spurt imminent
Danes have a very regal stature and their chests jut out and will out fully as they grow.
This little man is going to show the world how it’s done in a few months.
This is Buck, a 10 week old Great Dane pup. He has now mastered the sit command and is now part of the good boy club 🐶 from r/aww
30. The better to hear you with (but not necessarily listen)
But that’s illegal in some other countries and the practice among most Dane owners is going out of style since it’s considered cruel and pointless.
This is what many Danes look like naturally – their real ears are big and floppy!
31. Eyes of innocence
Well, by the look on his face, he’s done something to earn it, but he also knows how to work the emotions.
Great Danes are smarter than you think when it comes to manipulating humans.
32. Two babies
We don’t blame parents who’d rather not risk putting their child around a large dog, but if you already own one, you have to develop trust at some point – and the earlier the better.
While it’s never a good idea to leave a little one alone with even the gentlest of animals, these guys look like two peas in a pod.
33. Blue beauty
And we have no doubt she’ll only become more beautiful as she gains another 100 pounds or so.
34. Limbs in every direction
You can’t simply throw a toy and expect them not to chase it like mad as any other dog would. And you can’t be mad when they knock stuff over.
They need some outdoor space to get exercise.
35. Half-in, half-out
In fact, there’s enough of him on both sides so that he can stand comfortable AND give a hug!
36.Practicing intimidation
It appears she has a good teacher too.
But just wait until she weighs 120 pounds with that sass!
37. Little puppy, big paws
It’s not just because they’re still small, it’s because of the potential there. You never quite know just how big they’re going to get.
Some can weigh between 120-150 pounds, but many weigh much more and can easily put their paws on top of the refrigerator!
38. Man-sized best friend
In times like this (when it’s safer to be away from our friends), it’s nice to put your arm around a buddy just as big as you.
39. Awooooo!
The only saving grace is that it’s a deeper sound and not a screechy one.
But this little pup probably doesn’t have his baritone or bass voice down yet, so we wonder what that howling sounds like.
Hearing a Great Dane howl for 10 hours during a drive is quite a soundtrack!
40. Friends of all animals
Just look at this pack of pups that adopted a TURTLE as one of their own!
We’re not sure this picture shows anything about their size, but how could we not show it to you? It’s so sweet!
41. Feline friend
This cat doesn’t get along with other felines, but it’s happy to go belly-up to it’s new doggy pal. She probably senses that she’s in good company.
My cat has been staying with my mom recently and he has had issues getting along with other cats so I was worried about him with her dogs. But, apparently he’s fallen in love with her Great Dane. from r/aww
42. Savior
However, occassionally you’ll see a sad story of someone not being able to care for their dog and mistreating it before a rescue brings it in . Those Danes can have all the same behavioral issues that any other mistreated and untrained dog has and are extra lucky when someone saves them.
Their size can really intimidate people if they’ve haven’t been socialized.
So kudos to this man for giving this “little” boy a home!
Just got this little guy. He’s 6 months old and a rescue. He was skin and bones when my in-laws got him, but he doesn’t get along with the dogs out on the farm and they can’t keep him at their house in town long term, so we agreed to take him. My wife has wanted a great dane for years anyway, :-) from r/aww
43. The eyes have it
So you have to learn to be impervious to that Dane stare – it’s so cute you want to give them the world.
And in this case, we’d be positively hypnotized by it.
44. Armrest
As long as they’re treated with respect (which requires an adult to be nearby), they’ll lay around and watch a kiddo play for hours.
45. But I am the baby!
In this case, the sweet Great Dane knows its mom is pregnant and is either cuddling with its future sibling or reminding mom that she already has a big, furry baby that she can’t forget to pay attention to.
46. Fur-niture
Sometimes we’re comfortable in awkward positions – what can we say?
47. Linebackers
Be prepared for a REALLY big dog when you get a Dane – you just never know if you’re going to get a giant.
48. Walls can’t hold me back
But if it’s something they can put their paws up on, that’s a whole other story.
How would you react if you were walking by a big concrete wall and saw this face pop up?
49. Chin rest
Since this cutie doesn’t seem to be allow beyond the stool (and they really do respect those boundaries most of the time!), she’s decided to warm the seat with her face.
We’d probably wipe the drool off of that first since a dog’s mouth will literally water if it smells something good.
50. Let the dog lead
These dogs are always happy to put their paws on your shoulder. Just beware of the kisses at that point. There’s no escape and they are soft but slobbery.
51. Baby face
And this little guy looks like he’s smiling – our hearts are melting just looking at him!
My goofball, Kane. This was .5 seconds after sitting in the patio. Gotta love him! from r/greatdanes
52. Co-worker
Too bad you can’t teach them to mow the lawn!
53. The silliest sleepers
And sometimes they have vivid dreams in which they’ll bark AND kick – so, enjoy!
We’re not sure what’s going on here – maybe dreaming of reaching for a snack?
54. Willing to let you lead
That doesn’t mean you should let your kid run up to a big dog (or a small one), but you don’t have to be immediately intimidated by them either.
55. Some space on the couch
Technically, the dog has already been “assigned” most of the couch by the size of the cover.
You’re going to have to work with what you’ve got left.
56. They’ve even cute wheen they’re naughty
But we’re more caught up on the size of his tongue!
Who doesn’t want some kisses from this cute boy?!
We have a 15 week old Great Dane named Norm. He’s the best dude in the world but he has been trying to pull while going on walks. Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or training tips on the subject! Thanks! from r/greatdanes
57. Say goodbye to your bed
Once they’re there, we don’t know if they’ll be moving much except to make themselves more comfortable.
If you’re really lucky they might employ the “Great Dane seatbelt” where they just lay across your whole body.
58. Great goofs
This guy looks like he could take flight with those eats, Dumbo-style!
59. Dog meets donkey
Just sayin’.
We would love to know what’s going through this dog’s head right now.
60. Doggie worship
And can you imagine how nice it would be to have your paws rubbed every day after carrying that much weight around?
61. The big one and the boss
But it’s not always the biggest one.
A Dane’s gentle nature allows it to respect the order of the household without throwing around its weight.
62. Co-worker
So next time you’re working from home and need help on that presentation, just give a whistle.
63. Face-off
But with your own dog, things can be different – and they’re often just happy to have some face time with you.
64. Big brother
And he looks like her fiercest protector.
65. Growth spurt
See what we mean by growing into those paws?
That’s just a year’s worth of love and attention. Now it’s time to fill out that chest.
66. Who’s the boss?
But they do enjoy being all over YOU. So prepare for a head on your shoulder or a toy dropped at your feet if there’s a dog in the office.
67. His version of comfort
This pup looks like it fell asleep in the middle of climbing onto the couch.
We’ve all had those days when we couldn’t even make it to bed we were so tired.
68. Twin day
But seriously, do you wonder if they’re friends partly because they look so much alike?
69. Opposites attract
As long as Great Danes aren’t trained to be violent, they really are great around most smaller creatures.
It’s not a guarantee and requires lots of oversight, but once they know something is a friend, they’re friends for life.
Gentle giant Shelby, a blind three-year-old, 85lbs Great Dane, is bestest good boy to his tiny 2lb Chihuahua puppy fren Bianca presently at Dogwood Animal Rescue in Sebastopol, California from r/aww
70. Missing a piece
This girl looks like she needs some more assembly.
71. Weighted blanket
Now, if you want a blanket that doesn’t breathe, you might need to head to the store.
72. The huggable-est
And apparently, they’re baseball fans too!
The perfect dog!
73. Scooby don’t
It’s always a good idea to slowly teach them they’re safe around this stuff, but it’s hard not to get a giggle out of it first.
This 6-foot Great Dane named Presley is also known as Scooby-Doo duo to being afraid of everything, from tiny dogs, to plastic bags and vacuum cleaners from r/aww
74. Wide load
Just be careful since Danes are also celebrated farters!
75. Snuggle bug
And the fact that the toy is still intact proves what a gentle dog this is.
While Great Dane’s aren’t for everyone – especially those with minimal space – it’s not hard to appreciate their impressive size and sweet demeanor.
You may not have the space to devote to one, but there’s no reason to be intimidated by them just because they’re big.
They’re the ultimate gentle giants.
