Ever since the death of Tardar Sauce, the original “Grumpy Cat,” in 2019, the Internet has been on the lookout for a dour new feline icon. And we’ve been blessed with many, like Meow Meow, for example.
But Barbara is now ready for prime time with her cranky little face too.
Her owner Sarah Borok says that while she does have some cranky moments, the rescue cat is overall cuddly and affectionate.
“Barbara’s character fluctuates between being profoundly disappointed in everything I do, to being an adoring ball of mush that I can manipulate into any position without resistance,” Borok told Bored Panda.
That sounds like a cat to us!
Making her debut on Instagram in April of 2018, Barbara now has nearly 60,000 fans.
Here are some of our favorite photos of the little sourpuss.
1. Introducing Barbara
This was the first photo posted to the @grumpybarbara Instagram account on April 12, 2018.
She looks thrilled to meet everyone, doesnt she?
2. Why dost thou interrupt my nap?
Not a long enough stretch, apparently.
Next time make it 8 hours.
3. Drool is love
Despite the look on her face, Barbara is clearly enjoying her petting time.
Don’t think that just because you got a cat you get off drool-free!
4. Say what?
Welcome to the surveillance state, kitty.
5. Killer cuddles
But that doesn’t mean she didn’t love cuddle time too.
As cat owners know, only the cat knows how long cuddle time should last. The rest of us find out the hard way.
6. Faux fur fretting
But we’re pretty sure this is her happy face. Or at least content. Or at least as non-murdery as a cat can get.
7. Swimming in siblings
Doesn’t Barbara look impressed?
8. All these channels and nothing to watch
Barbara has clearly run out of shows to binge-watch and has taken the remote so she doesn’t have to watch anyone else’s shows either.
9. Couch grouch
Or maybe she’s just wondering why there’s a bust of Nefertiti on the mantle but no cat figurines.
10. Sweet but sour sleeper
It looks like the cat expects company during her day naps as well.
11. What are you lookin’ at?
And while she’s so photogenic, she’s also a moody little model.
12. Mew-dy model
Those eyes! That curly, fuzzy chest!
That experssion that says “touch me and die.”
13. Belligerent bed-maker
It just doesn’t work.
Between their love of clean sheets and their assumption that bed-making is simply a game, you might as well just dump everything on the bed and let the cat get hair all over it again.
14. Turns in temperament
It took her a month, but after that, she was comfortable in her new home.
The only issue was some lingering dislike of strangers – but let’s face it, that’s THEY’RE problem.
15. Post-travel testiness
Borok took this photo when she got back from California and Barbara simply wouldn’t leave her alone for days.
She might look mad, but she certainly loves her mom!
16. Boxing Barbara
Barbara is just like any other cat with her love of Amazon boxes. But it looks like she was pretty disappointed with the order itself.
17. Dis mine
They’re pretty possessive of their owners (at least their favorite owners) and Heaven help you if you try to get in the way.
18. Snuggle buddy
She loves laying just about anywhere on her mom – because humans are just furniture after all.
19. Is this my good side?
But you can look both cranky and majestic at the same time – and this cat is proof!
20. Surly stretch
That’s all part of her unique charm.
21. A study in contrasts
We just hope she didn’t knock him off the shelf right after this was taken.
22. Can’t you see I’m busy here
Barbara clearly wants some privacy here.
23. Fearsome feline
And any other cat is sinister at least some of the time.

24. Irritably insulted
Then again, she’s still content to lay on her mom’s belly, so it couldn’t have been that scandalous.
25. The cold shoulder
Looks like Barbara is not up for criticism. After all, SHE’S the professional sleeper in the house.
26. Crabby cuddles
“The internet has fallen in love with Barbara’s grumpy face but mostly as it completely contradicts the extreme smothering affection they see in her with me. It seems to give her more complexity, and also makes me the envy of, like, millions of women?” Borok joked to Bored Panda.
27. Scowl with your eyes
Who could resist this face?
28. Mommy and me
“Barbara’s priority in life is to be on me, wherever I am, and that includes the bathroom,” Borok explained to Bored Panda.
29. Pensive plotting
She’s not a huge fan of guests, so we hope no one came to visit the house on this day.
30. Ferocious furball
But by this time Barbara had gotten over much of her aggression. Now the murder appears to be limited to her facial expression.
31. Belligerent beauty
But who could resist capturing those gorgeous greeen eyes?
32. Death stare
But this is simply Barbara’s resting face.
In fact, this might be her happy face!
33. Casually cross
“I don’t think Barbara is capable of sleeping in any position that is detached from my arm,” Borok revealed.
34. Possessive puss
But we see what’s really going on here and that’s some serious love for her human.
Maybe she just really loathes the camera because it means there’s one less hand available to pet her.
35. Petulant pose
We all know someone who looks much friendlier in person.
36. Voicing her concerns
We can’t help but laugh at this photo snapped at just the right moment to make this sweet kitty look truly peeved.
37. Journaling
Barbara is clearly finding a more productive way to express her concerns about the world.

38. Fur-midable face
It’s a good thing we know she’s a sweet girl because this photo alone would have us pretty afraid of her.
39. Lost in thoughts…of murder
That’s the beauty of Barbara – you can interpret those facial expressions at will.
40. Cat-itude
Barbara clearly just wants to be left alone to hate the world in peace.
Don’t we all sometimes?
41. Grouchy glare
But we’re not sure how close we’d put our hands to this face.
42. You are in-fur-ior
In fact, it looks like she would prefer it that way.
43. Best furends
And you know you’re a lucky cat when you don’t get booted out of bed for being such a pest.
44. Selfie snarl
And yet, we’re still in love.
45. Cranky close-up
While it looks like you’d lose a finger in the process, there’s something so irresistable about Barbara that we wish we had a grumpy little girl of our own.
46. Are you fur-real?
Could it be because all hands are on the camera and none are on her?
Where is the attention she so richly deserves?!
47. Purr-fect pout
Little does she know that the crankier she looks the more we want to see that face.
48. Ear-ily irritated
Those ears say it all.
49. Pouter puss
She’s not even in the mood to give the camera the death glare.
We’d be sleeping with one eye open.
50. Paw-den me, I need another
We feel your pain, Barbara.
No tip for this bad service.

51. Almost sweet side glance
Here eyes still say “don’t even think about it” but we’d be tempted to snuggle this little bug anyway.
52. Laptop lifestyle
They’ll certainly show up for work, but they won’t let you get anything done.
At least Barbara is staying off the laptop.
We’re just not sure we could concentrate with that face staring back at us.
53. Bookshelf boredom
Or she’s upset that there are no books about cats.
It looks like she’s willing to stage a sit-in until things change.
54. Surly and sleepy
Maybe it’s because everyone still thinks she’s so cute despite her best efforts to be grumpy.
55. You can’t come in
Who needs a guard dog when you have this face to turn people away?
56. We don’t share the chair
This is Barbara’s chair. Don’t even think about sitting in it.
She can even tell you’re still thinking about sitting in it.
57. Still the boss in black and white
She’s just as cranky in black and white.
58. Stop the mew-sic
To be fair, it’s hard to play when you don’t have fingers.
59. Crotchety kisses
She’s always up for cuddles and kisses, even if she scowls the whole time.
That’s just part of her charm!

60. Crabby kitty
From her curly fur to her wild whiskers to her fur-rocious frown, Barbara is winning hearts around the world.
And she looks really impressed by all that.
