It’s been thousands of years since humans started training dogs to do specific tasks. Even now, plenty of dogs were trained and taught jobs like herding, hunting, service, therapy, and guiding, and other jobs that only our furry friends can do.
Here are over fifty dogs that have wowed us with their hard work and perseverance in their special jobs.
1. Ready for what comes their way
Military dogs are trained to jump in any danger anytime. Not only are they risking their own life for their handler, but the rest of the squad, helping them turn the tides of the battlefield.
2. We all need a hand at home
When we’re doing some home renovation stuff and there’s no one else to hold the ladder, let this good boy help you out. He’ll certainly make sure you’re safe and you’ll be able to pet him afterward.
3. Tired herder
This pooch was training to herd farm goats and chicken, but obviously, with her small pup body, it would be quite exhausting. This was her after doing her job.
4. We all need some comfort
This was at King Scooper in Boulder where people come to show respect after the tragic mass shooting incident. On-site, there are some comfort dogs that you can pet to lift your spirits up.
5. Warm welcome
This pooch’s job was to greet guests at the pub. Greeting everyone with his warmest smile, everyone will be sure to stop and pat this good dog’s head.
6. Genuine happiness
This service dog accompanied his owner at the streetcar, but it seems that it was also his first time riding one. The happiness and excitement painted on his face are simply priceless.
7. Undergoing training
This 8-month German Shepherd named Ben had been training as someone’s assistant dog. Just by the looks of him, he’s pretty reliable enough to be on your side.
8. Puppy herder
Although she’s quite smaller than the baby goats on the farm, this puppy works his hardest to be a great herder someday. She’ll surely be three times bigger than goats after a few years.
9. Helping with the taxes
Since it’s almost the end of tax season, this dog was helping his fur-parents sort out things. He looks pretty serious as if he’s trying to spot some inconsistencies in the calculation.
10. What off-duty feels like
Even for dogs, work is pretty much exhausting. They may come into work fully focused and composed, but when they get home, it’s time for warm cuddles and yummy treats.

Chell, a six-year-old Border Collie mix had done a good job completing a 3-night run of live theater in her first acting gig. He deserves some love after a job well done.
12. Helping out after a tragic disaster
After a deadly earthquake that wiped out 185 human lives in 2011, several search dog parties are deployed to sniff out survivors. These dogs have been hailed as Canine heroes after a splendid job.
13. A proper send-off
It is inevitable for service dogs to retire so they could have the chance to live life as a normal dog. So before this dog retired in the military, the whole force gave him a proper send-off to his new life as a “thank you” for his efforts.

Norton is a sweet pooch and was assigned to work at a children’s hospital. With his vibrant smile and gentleness, there’s no reason for the kids not to love him.

Some dogs are trained to sniff out narcotics and harmful drugs in people’s belongings. This is one moment where this German Shepherd managed to sniff out drugs that are disguised to be a birthday present.

In some places, dogs are often trained to protect local penguins from various predators like foxes. There’s even a movie inspired by these penguin-saving dogs.

Nine years is already pretty much for a dog. However, this K9-trained dog reached nine years of his life still working hard to render good service for everyone. This dog’s smile radiates like a puppy’s.

There are times when people get stuck under the snow because of an avalanche. With rescue dogs trained for this dangerous job, it’ll be easier to locate them and get them out before it’s too late. This pooch just completed her training and is now a legitimate avalanche rescue dog.

These dogs are on standby and ready to plunge in the water to save someone from drowning. However, they’re paw-sitive that nothing bad will happen.
22. Best service dogs
These Golden retrievers are serving as assistants for quadriplegic people. From helping pick up and fetch items, opening, and closing doors, to helping them with their clothes, these dogs can do pretty much everything.
23. Swearing-in their important duties
This is the moment where these dogs have officially sworn in their duties as service dogs. This proud moment made them recognized as part of the Special Victims K-9 Unit, specializing in comforting victims during court trials and such.
24. Badass protectors
Temüjin and Lozen are both Turkish Shepherd dogs made to guard a duck farm from an eagle attack. They managed to fend their enemies, resulting in one of the ducks surviving after a vicious attack.
25. Dogs on the battlefield
During WW1 and WW2, dogs have become quite an essential unit in the military. Some are trained to be on the battlefield while some assume to be in the paramedic role. They are called mercy dogs, and they help with comforting wounded soldiers.
26. Helping with the experiments
This dog has been great as a scientist’s assistant. He’d be lying on his spot watching his human perform experiments, and making sure that everything goes smoothly.
27. Concerned about the baby sheep
These sheepdogs won’t allow you to be alone with the baby sheep. They’d follow you anywhere until the sheep comes back to the shed safe and sound.
28. Training them early
Despite the thick snow and freezing weather, this puppy is starting his training as an avalanche rescue dog. Surely with enough training, it won’t take long until he becomes an excellent rescuer.
29. Sleeping on the job
Dogs get exhausted while doing their work too, they sometimes slip occasional naps in between while their owner is away. But with a peaceful day like this, anyone would be tempted to take a nap. You just can’t blame him for doing so.

Some dog jobs provide them with their own IDs. Just like Sophie, a therapy dog in the Mental & Addiction Health department. Even just by looking at her ID alone, it makes you feel reassured already.
31. Boop zone
Found in the New Zealand police dog calendar, there seems to be a chart showing the anatomy of a working dog. The next best thing about their superhero costumes is their adorable boop zones.
32. Shepherding training
This trainee shepherd is working hard to become a great herder. Every time the temperature becomes warmer, this dog and his handler would go out to train in the snow along with the sheep.
33. Breaktime buddies
Break is essential most especially for good working dogs like them. They still have the energy to smile at the camera even after their goat herding duties.
34. First time in the snow
This K9-trained dog had to report on duty for a robbery during winter. It was his first time in the snow, but he still managed to do his job right by locating two robbery suspects. He deserves to spend some time playing in the snow if he still has some energy left.
35. After a hard work
Everyone loves a dip in the water after doing a job well done. The same goes for these hardworking pooches. They did not hesitate to fill their pool and had a fun bath party with everyone.
36. Training class begins
The first day is always tough, especially for this puppy in training. He sure deserved a long rest after going through his first class.
37. Nervous first day
Everyone might recall being incredibly nervous in attending a class or a job on the first day. This dog is the same, he just can’t get his paws off yet from his handler.
38. Helping with the airport’s safety
This is Piper, a famous Border Collie dog that has helped in wildlife mitigation at airports. She, unfortunately, died battling cancer. It is quite rare for dogs to have this kind of job, but hopefully, there will be more dogs to undertake this challenge.

This dog had been on military service as a bomb dog for plenty of years. This photo was taken in 2012 and was the last photo taken on the battlefield. This dog continued living his life normally with his handler at a loving home.
40. He’s there to make you feel at ease
Sammy’s job is to greet everyone in the psychiatrist’s office, as well as providing emotional support to patients and workers alike. As much as he loves providing these helpful benefits, he loves to be showered with lots of attention at the same time.
41. Crowded restaurant
This dog had become a mascot and the greeter in the restaurant. Even when the whole place is filled, this pooch makes sure to do a great job in making everyone feel happy during their stay.
42. Having fun on the job
There is no reason not to have fun while doing your job. This dog shows his very cheerful personality, as he runs across the green fields to get the job done.
43. Birthday doggo
This brave dog, Max, turned 8 and everyone in the police department went and prepared various stuff to throw him a birthday party. This priceless moment would sure make Max happy especially with the yummy cake as well as the toy presents he got from everyone.
44. Concerned doggo
There is a community service dog that had been providing different kinds of help to the residents. Someone was hysterically laughing out loud that this dog suddenly comes up with an inhaler.
45. Maxed bravery
This doggo was deployed in Puerto Rico to respond to a mission following Hurricane Maria and jumped 30 feet out of a helicopter when he caught the scent of someone in need. This photo was taken moments before joining another rescue party for Hurricane Florence.
46. Got a job to be on a game
This adorable pittie was chosen to try out being a dog in a game. The developers have stuck a bunch of nodes on him, but he still remained obedient and did what was asked.
47. Their job as comforters
After an intense court trial, whether victims win or not, these dogs will always be there to lend their comforting presence to help them through. These amazing dogs are incredibly great at their jobs.
48. Acting dogs
Funny how editors have to put CGI over the acting dogs’ tails to hide their wagging tails. You just can’t blame them for showing too much excitement while being on the set.
49. Smile on IDs
Most people can relate to having an awkward smile on their IDs. Ronny sure did a great job being on the camera. Despite working as a police dog, he looks pretty tame and approachable.
50. Apparently, dogs can be mayor too!
This is Max, or Maximus Mighty-Dog Mueller, the second and current Mayor of Idyllwild, California. He’s doing his best to make sure that the town is safe for everyone to live in.
51. Punctual dogs
These dogs will never let a second slip on their schedule as therapy dogs. The moment the children come out of their rooms, they’d immediately be greeted by these punctual floofballs.
52. The best guide dog
This is Roselle, Michael Hingson’s trusty guide dog. Hingson managed to survive from the 9/11 attack being on the 78th floor of the building. This epic story turned into a book called, Thunderdog.
53. Our dogs need this kind of awards
Even though they are just house dogs, we should always reward them for doing a great job making us happy every day. This guy really knows what he’s doing.
54. Jolly medical dog
This dog is super enthusiastic being on his first day of medical alert training. It’s like he already knows that he’s going to nail every test that you’ll throw at him.
55. New life as a rescue dog
This pooch was once rescued from a big flood in Mexico. This time he’s working hard to repay his rescuers by training as a rescue dog himself. He’ll be able to rescue other people and dogs in no time.
It’s quite amazing to think that some dogs are capable of doing serious types of jobs and even excel in different fields that we can’t achieve as humans. With their intelligence and obedience, dogs have become lovely, quick-learning workers that contribute a lot to society.
