When it comes to animals, the internet’s first love will always be cats. From grumpy ones to ones that want cheeseburgers, they’ve been obsessed with the fluffy animals since the invention of the meme. But there’s another fluffy animal that deserves an honorable mention, and it’s not just because they’re so darn cute.

Alpacas live and thrive in South America. Don’t get them confused with llamas, because they’re not the same. All right, they’re ALMOST the same: alpacas are a little bit smaller, but the two species are closely related and frequently interbred.

Fun fact: there are no alpacas in the wild. That’s right, they’re exclusively a domestic animal these days, and they’re loved around the world as farm animals and pets alike. They supply humans with their gorgeously soft wool, which can be used for weaving blankets, clothes, and more. They’ve been domesticated in the Americas for about 6,000 years (cats, if you were wondering, have been kept as pets since about 10,000 years ago).

Alpacas are loved not only for their beautiful fur, but also their hilariously expressive faces. They’re a great feature in wildlife photography, always happy to smile, big teeth and all.
