If you’ve ever met somebody who says, “Oh, I’m not really fussed about dogs either way,” your instincts might tell you not to trust them. But don’t be so quick to deem them an unworthy friend, as most people who claim to have no interest in dogs can be won over much more easily than you’d think.
These people tend to think that they’re too busy for a dog, or that taking care of a canine friend is too much hard work. Luckily, it only takes actually getting a dog for them to realize just how wrong their preconceptions were.
Without further ado, here are 35 dog owners who didn’t “want a dang dog in the house”… until they had one.
1. “We’re bringing him back”
This dog dad said before they brought their dog home: “Listen, if the dog barks like crazy, sh**s in the house, or destroys things we are bringing him back.” As we can see from the photos, he’s now the sort of dad to say: “Wrap him in a blanket, he’s cold!” His wife thinks he’d even choose the dog over her these days.
2. Hand and paw
This person’s grandpa had a dog that passed a few years back. We all know the pain of losing a furry friend, and in this grandpa’s case, he swore he wouldn’t ever get or love another dog again. Thankfully, it didn’t take much for him to realize just how empty his life was without a dog by his side. According to his granddaughter, Delilah is now the love of his life, and they hold hands.
3. Adopting a senior dog
Adopting a senior dog is a big decision, and this person’s boyfriend told her that he didn’t want to adopt a dog that would “break our heart one day soon.” But she persevered, and brought home a senior dog that had a beautiful two years of life with her family. She wrote that they “would do it all over again.”
4. Dad and pup
This clever dog owner said to her husband, “fine, you can bottle feed but you have to promise we are not keeping any of them…” about their two pups. The first pup is called Jasper, her husband’s dachshund, and three-legged Theodore came into their lives as a companion for Jasper.
5. Pit bulls everywhere
Pit bulls get a bit of a bad rap – people assume that they’re all overly boisterous and dangerous, and this really isn’t the case. This proud owner of multiple pitties once said that she’d never own a pit bull. She also said she’d never have more kids, and she ended up having two more – so she obviously isn’t very good at sticking to her word!
6. Dad didn’t want the pup
It’s a familiar scenario in every household: Mom: “What do you think about getting a new puppy?” Dad: “Absolutely not!” Mom: *goes and gets pup anyways*. Following this, mom suggests giving the pup away to the grandkids, and dad vehemently refuses, saying, “Absolutely not! He’s my little man!” Well, that’s settled that, then.
7. “Too young” for a dog
When she was aged just 16, this person’s friend had puppies, and she begged her dad to have one. Her dad refused – but she managed to convince him to “at least come and look at them”. And that was that. She was named “Tippy”, and was supposed to be the girl’s dog. Instead, Tippy became very much the child of her dad.
8. Best of friends
6 years ago, this person’s husband visited the local dog shelter, and called home to ask if he could bring a dog back with him. The wife was still heartbroken over the loss of her previous dog, but her hubby insisted. The pair were already best friends. Though her husband passed away suddenly 4 years ago, he left behind his “big, smelly dog”, and the wife is thankful to have him.
9. “We’re only looking”
When this family passed an advertisement for German shepherd puppies for sale, mom’s response was, “Yeah, right!” But she was the one who relented and said they could go and look at the pups. Her dad said he didn’t want a dog either, but it only took one glance at a particular puppy – and now the family has a four-year-old German Shepherd. His name is Cuda.
10. “Don’t you think 4 dogs is too much?”
This person’s partner asked her whether they really needed a fourth dog. Obviously, it didn’t take her long to switch his opinions, and he clearly doesn’t think the fourth pup is excessive anymore! According to his partner, he even calls her “Princess Cutie Pie”. Adorable!
11. A house full of cats
This couple had been talking about getting a dog since they bought a house, but with five cats and credit card debt they just didn’t think they’d have the room or the funds. But one day they talked about how funny it would be if the pair bought a great dane, with them and the cats being so small in comparison.” They both laughed, but two years and two danes later…
12. “Too early” for a dog
At 22 years old, despite working in an animal-centered job as a veterinary technician, this woman had no intention of getting a dog this early in her life. But then the dog of a breeder client of hers had a litter, and 2 out of 11 pups were born with cleft palates, another with a cleft lip. Two of the pups didn’t make it, but the third one survived. When the woman had to look after the pup, it was love at first sight, and she knew the dog had to be hers.
13. “I’m a lab person”
Having only ever owned labs, this person found that this was the type of dog that she was drawn to. But her fiance was determined to get a rottweiler, and she said absolutely not – she thought they were big, loud and scary. But she eventually came around to the idea, and the pup has gotten her through a major stroke at 40. He will now be walking his owner down the aisle once the pandemic has passed.
14. Never give up
This person took a husky into their life called Storm as an emergency foster. Despite knowing nothing of huskies, and knowing that two fosters had already bailed on Storm, her owner didn’t want to give in on her. And, as it turns out, Storm and her owner got on like a house on fire. Within 24 hours, Storm’s owner knew that the dog was theirs.
15. “We’re not getting a dog!”
After this person moved into her home, she started a creative way of letting her husband know she wanted a dog: by leaving dog toys and treats around the house- on the fireplace, in his car, on his pillow… Her husband told her, “We’re not getting a dog!” Three dogs later, and this is their new reality.
16. Dog family
When this person married her husband, the husband was adamant about not having dogs ever. Finally, after lots of begging, hubby agreed that his wife could adopt a GSD puppy from the shelter. 31 years later, the pair have owned more than 40 dogs together, and have a family of 22 of them still with them. And hubby is at the center of all the chaos!
17. Best friends
6 months after this person’s dog of 15 years had passed, she, her mom and brother still weren’t over it. But they wanted a new dog to fill the hole in their hearts. Her dad wasn’t so sure, but then they found a dog, Jade, at a local rescue center. As soon as they bought Jade home, she ran to dad for cuddles. She’s now dad’s “tiny princess”.
18. Me or the dog
This person’s ex told her we weren’t having a dachshund when they moved in together, despite the fact that she’d grown up with them since she was 11. So, one month later, she broke up with him, bought the house that the pair were supposed to buy together – and her mom gave her the best gift ever! She says that her Ralph is evidence that she upgraded to a better bearded bloke, and we’d have to agree.
19. “More of a cat person”
This woman knew that she’d always have at least one dog in her home. Her future husband said that he was more of a cat person, but “you do you”. A few years later, both she and her husband were the proud owners of three dogs, including a foster who had been seriously ill. True love right there.
20. “Noo” to “yees”!
The first picture shows this woman’s initial text to her husband when she found the pup of her dreams. Her hubby then bought an expensive harness to walk him, and that’s when his wife knew they’d be keeping him. Hubby and dog are now BFFs. His wife is okay with this because she has two other doggos that favor her!
21. The look of love
When this woman met her partner 2 years ago, he’d only ever had working dogs. Her partner was skeptical about her own chihuahuas, saying that they aren’t real dogs. He also laid down the rules – the sofa and bed were both dog-free zones. Fast forward 2 years and he changed his tune completely!
22. Just “not ready”
It’s not that this woman didn’t want a dog, she just wasn’t ready. She’d just got into a new relationship and was trying to navigate life. But then she got a phone call about a one-eared doberman puppy, and the woman agreed to foster her – and the rest is history. It took a lot of training, but with persistence from her owner, the pup turned into “the sweetest most loving lap dog”.
23. “Not until we get a house”
If you’re a dog lover, you might be familiar with this story! This person’s boyfriend told her that they should have “absolutely no more dogs” until they bought a house. A year later, despite saying he wouldn’t give in, her boyfriend accompanied her on a 10-hour drive to pick up their 3rd pup.
24. Small and grown
This person has a great story of how they came to adopt their fourth dog! She suggested going to the pound and check out some rescues – “just to pass the time”. Her hubby refused, arguing that they already had three. Less than a day later, and they had their fourth puppy. It didn’t take much convincing for dad to gain a brand new best friend. Now the two are inseparable.
25. “I don’t need another one”
Admittedly “the OG love of their lives”, this person’s black lab passed away 6 years ago. After five years without a dog in the house, this person’s son and herself snuck out on a 12 hour round trip to the mountains to get a new dog, Howard. Her husband wasn’t interested in a new dog in the slightest – but a year later, and the pair do everything together, including watching TV.
26. “Not ANOTHER dog!”
This person was convinced that they didn’t need ANOTHER dog. With a new baby and two older dogs to care for, she just didn’t have the time. But then she took on a puppy that was aggressive and manic, for training. It turned out that this puppy had been living in terrible conditions, and the woman knew she had to step in. She picked up the puppy at 3 months old, and never regretted her decision for a second.
27. A new lease of life
We all go through our own struggles in life, but this woman had it tougher than others – she spent 7 years of her life hooked up for 20 hours a week to a machine to filter her blood. After she got a transplant, all she wanted was to be free and travel. But her boyfriend wanted a dog. Omar, their shared pup, has been to more states in his 2 years than his owner had in 25 years.
28. Overcoming addiction
When this person moved out of her mom’s into a house with her fiance, she was in a bad place. On probation, fighting addiction and fearful of any more responsibilities. But she’d always been a dog lover, and posted on Facebook to say jokily that she had puppy fever. A few months later and Stella, came into her life, followed by a friend for Stella.
29. Abandoned and taken in
This person went to the farm to grab some pumpkins for jack o lanterns – only to discover that there was an adoption event at the farm, full of puppies. She caught sight of this poor pup, who had bad eyes, bad teeth, and bad hip, even her graying hair. This woman too felt that she had bad eyes, bad teeth, a bad hip, and graying hair – so they really weren’t so different!
30. He didn’t want a dog
When this guy met his now-wife, Beth, she had a 9-month-old dog named Bogo. For six months, the guy told Beth that he couldn’t date her, and it was partly because he didn’t want a dog. But five years later and Beth’s pup was the ring bearer at their wedding, and they all share a bed together at night.
31. Prefers big dogs
This dog dad is a big dog kind of guy – we’re talking mastiff size. But then this little foster dog came into their lives – and never left. The guy absolutely adores his little pup, despite the fact that he’s the worst behaved dog of the pack and by far the most expensive because of his health problems. Bless!
32. No moving out
This person’s 10-year-old dog, Josie started out adopted as a puppy by her friend’s brother and his wife. But they soon realized that they couldn’t keep the pup, and the woman called her mom to see if they could keep her. After several nos, she finally warmed her parents to the idea of a dog. Fast forward a few years later when she was finally moving out of home, and she asked her dad what he was going to do since she was moving out and Josie would be coming with me. His exact words were, “F you, no she’s not.” Well, that told her!
33. Too expensive
This girl’s boyfriend was horrified at how much she’d spent on a dog. But really, just look at that little face – you couldn’t resist! Unsurprisingly, he instantly fell in love with the pup, and now she’s “forever a daddy’s girl”. Too sweet.
34. Miracle child
Bo, the pup in this picture, was one of a litter of 14. The health of the puppies started declining, and her now-owner knew that she had to take her ASAP. At 6 weeks old, the pup became a new member of this person’s family. Her husband was reluctant, but came with her to pick up their “miracle child” – and her partner thanks her all the time “for pushing him to take her”.
35. From dog hater to dog servant
Finally, this dog dad had initially said that he’d never have anything to do with his girlfriend’s dog, saying: “He’s not mine. He is yours. I won’t feed it or walk it. You must take care of it!” Dad in the present is a completely different person when it comes to his pup. He’s more than happy to wait on his friend’s every need, even heating up his food to how he prefers it.
