The director of Animal Services in Bergen County, New Jersey, named Deborah Yankow, received a call from the SPCA requesting urgent help. She knew it must have been an emergency — but she was not expecting this shocking surprise at all.

Twenty-six thirsty French and English Bulldogs were found inside of a parked van outside of a Walmart.

The small puppies were crammed into just two crates inside of the car. It was a warm and humid day in the area, and they had no room to move. Not to mention — no water to drink.

“They were literally on top of each other,” Yankow told WCBS-TV. “It was a 90-degree day; they were all overheated, they’re all short-nosed puppies, which have a very serious reaction to heat normally, let alone in the back of a car.”

The owners of the van had reportedly left the two dozen puppies in the hot car for 45 long minutes. They returned as the puppies were being rescued.

When the dogs were placed into an officer’s van — they basically leaped into the bottles of water. They were so thirsty. The rescue team was determined to figure out what was going on here.

They located documents of the dogs and found that they were imported from Colombia; the owners of the van were most likely going to try and make a profit from the puppies.

The pups would sell between $1,000 and $3,000 each. They were looking for a profit.

Due to this incident of abuse and neglect, the animals were taken from the van owners. All of the 26 dogs were taken to an animal shelter in Teterboro, New Jersey where they will be held in quarantine for a few weeks.

Before the puppies can be adopted, they will need to pass quarantine to make sure they are healthy and free of disease. It’s unclear whether the owners of the van will be charged with any crimes.

We couldn’t be happier that these 26 puppies were found before it was too late, and we’re certain they’ll all find loving, forever homes.
