Although Sphynx cats are generally referred to as being “hairless,” that’s actually not the case. Sphynxes are covered in a fine layer of super soft fuzz. It’s super soft to the touch and has a texture similar to suede. You might find yourself addicted to petting their not-so-hairless skin!

2. They are not from Egypt

Despite what their name insinuates, this cat breed is actually not from Egypt (where the Sphynx statue is located). The Sphynx actually originated in Toronto, Canada. According to The Cat Fancier’s Association, “in 1966 a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten in Toronto Canada. It was discovered to be a natural genetic mutation and the Sphynx cat, as we know it today, came into existence.”

3. They’re four degrees warmer than other cats

Even though Sphynx cats don’t have traditional fur, their bodies still produce a natural oil. For most cat breeds, this oil keeps their fur soft and sleek, but for a Sphynx, it builds up and forms a greasy film on their bodies. It’s important for owners to give them a weekly bath to keep them clean, making sure to pay special attention to their sensitive, mostly hairless ears.

5. They like to eat – a lot.

This unique cat breed tends to constantly be noshing, and it’s actually because they need to! Since their body temperature is higher than other cats, their body requires more energy to keep up that heat. It’s their natural way of keeping their internal temps up high.

Since people think Sphynxes are hairless, they also assume that they are hypoallergenic; however, this is not the case. Their skin still produces dander which is the irritant that bothers people with allergies. In fact, since they don’t have fur to catch the dander, these dead skin cells can easily end up on you and around your home.

7. They like to go on walks

A recent study by the Journal of Veterinary Behavior ranked the Sphynx as the most affectionate cat breed. According to Mental Floss, there might be a couple reasons for this. “Experts have a few theories: It could be because they rely on humans to keep warm; because friendlier cats might be selected for breeding; or because breeders tend to leave Sphynx kittens with their mothers for longer periods of time.”

11. They love to chit-chat

12. They’re better off with their own cat beds instead of sleeping with you
