If you live in an apartment or in a home close to other neighbors, being quiet and respectful is always important. However, if we have dogs, sometimes they can bark when they are feeling anxious or energetic, and although we might not mind, our neighbors might feel differently.
Although there’s no such thing as a dog that doesn’t bark, there are certain dog breeds that are inherently quiet.
Recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), these 10 dog breeds are known to be some of the quietest. Perfect for apartment living (if your landlord allows pets, of course!).
1. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
These sweet-faced dogs are known to be affectionate, gentle, and graceful according to the AKC. The Cavalier King is bred with royal roots dating back to the 17th century and belonged to aristocrats. They rarely feel the need to bark, unless they get separated for too long from their human.
2. Greyhound
Some people might think that Greyhounds are constantly hyper, wanting to run around all day – but the fact is, they actually love to just hang out. Plus, when iHeartDogs conducted a survey of 130 Greyhound owners, they found that 90% of them answered ‘ no’ when asked: “Does your Greyhound bark or howl a lot?”
3. Basenji
The Basenji is known as Africa’s “barkless dog,” although it’s not mute – it simply just doesn’t bark hardly at all! “Yes, it’s true, they don’t bark, but they make their feelings known with an odd sound described as something between a chortle and a yodel,” AKC says.
4. English Bulldog
Sadly, Bulldogs have a gruesome history of being bred for fighting, but thankfully, they’re now silly, cuddly pets that people love and adore. Not only that, but they’re super quiet. Although they don’t bark much, they do let out funny snorts and grunts.
5. Newfoundland
AKC describes the Newfoundland as sweet, patient, and devoted. “The sweet-tempered Newfie is a famously good companion and has earned a reputation as a patient and watchful “nanny dog” for kids,” they say. They also tend to only bark when completely necessary.
6. Pug
Although they can be a bit on the mischievous side, Pugs are very charming and loving. First bred as companions to Chinese emperors, they are now the ideal house dog. They are laid-back, quiet (with some occasional grunts), and have some adorable facial expressions.
7. Japanese Chin
“Often described as a distinctly “feline” breed, this bright and amusing lapdog is fastidious, graceful, and generally quiet,” the AKC says on their website. It’s also said that these dogs are extremely smart and that they own you, not the other way around!
8. Rhodesian Ridgeback
Rhodesian Ridgebacks are fiercely loyal dogs. They are faithful companions, very protective, and extremely affectionate with those that they trust. Although they require daily exercise, they are quiet, well-mannered dogs who do very well indoors.
9. Chinese Shar-Pei
As if their adorable wrinkles aren’t amazing enough, the Chinese Shar-Pei is known to be very calm and independent. This regal dog doesn’t do very well with strangers but is very serene when in their familiar, comfortable environment.
10. Great Dane
