A southeast Florida resident was in his home and came across his pet’s food bowl when he realized that it wasn’t his pet who was eating out of the bowl.

A sickly looking stray cat had wandered into his home and was ravenously eating the kibble he laid out for his own kitty.

The poor cat was visibly malnourished and had such severe mange that his little eyes were crusted shut. Basically, this cat had been wandering the streets essentially blind searching for food and trying to survive on his own.

The man knew that the cat was in need of medical attention so he took out a cat carrier and lured the sick kitty inside with some food. Then he did what most people do these days when they have a question.

He took to social media asking advice on what to do.

Carmen Morales Weinberg, the founder of Animal Friends Project rescue organization, reached out to the man and offered to that the cat in.

She immediately took the stray, who they named Cotton, to the veterinarian where he was treated for mange, dehydration, and malnourishment.

Weinberg then took him home with her so that Cotton could comfortably recover.

“He purred the whole time they were examining him!” she told Honest to Paws. “He received antibiotics, a dose of Revolution and fluids and we went home. Fortunately, I had a spare bathroom where he could stay.”

Thank goodness for her intervention because Cotton seemed to be truly sick and suffering.

His mange was so bad that it left parts of his eye, both his ears red and other parts of its body red and irritated without any fur.

“Cotton stayed hunched over for days and days and seemed very uncomfortable,” she said. “It was hard seeing him in that condition, knowing only time would heal him. Little by little he started to gain weight. It was a nice surprise to see that he had one blue eye and one yellow eye. His hair started to grow again.”

Eventually, Cotton started to heal thanks to the love and affection from his foster family.

Cotton really enjoyed being a house cat and would follow his humans around their home.

Cotton was still living with Weinberg as of September since he got another skin infection

“I know I should find him a home but at the same time, it is hard to imagine him somewhere else,” she said on Facebook.
