Much of the world has been distancing themselves from others for a few weeks now. For a lot of people, that’s incredibly challenging. Not only does that prevent them from seeing their friends but they also can’t go out…at all. It’s inconvenient, but most of all, it’s boring.

That’s why people are getting creative with how they connect. After all, social distancing doesn’t mean being antisocial. Rather, it’s about not being physically in contact. So, people are coming up with clever ways to connect.

More people are connecting with neighbors

During this challenging time, more and more people are connecting with their neighbors. They want to make sure they’re okay. They also want to ask them about their pets. For some individuals stuck inside all day, they get to see animals in other people’s houses.

They’re using signs

Since neighbors can’t get out of their houses and talk with each other in person, they’re doing it by using signs instead. This is a clever way of doing things because it doesn’t involve any contact. They just write their signs and place them in their windows.

Neighbors are asking about each other’s cats

Since people can often see their neighbor’s cats sitting or sleeping in windows, they want to know more. So, some individuals are using signs to ask about the cats’ names. They get to exchange information but without talking in person.

Unique conversations

Of course, when you start asking questions, you expect a response. And that’s what’s happening. People are having entire conversations simply by being creative.

It makes social distancing more fun

Let’s face it, social distancing is a drag. But with this unique option for communicating, it’s become more fun. Neighbors who never knew one another are having bona fide conversations. And this clever solution makes it hilarious.

Where it all started

Sian Cosgrove is from Leeds, England. She’s one of the first people to try this. She and her partner have been social distancing in their home like responsible adults. But one day as she looked out the window, she saw her neighbor’s cat.

She had to learn more

That’s when she came up with the idea of writing a note using a poster board. Then, with a marker, she wrote her question. She wanted to know the cat’s name.

A perfect explanation

Cosgrove said, “[We] are now both working from home so we are pretty much completely in the house (aside from food shops, etc.). It was very strange at first but now we’re getting used to it! We saw the cat sitting in the window opposite our house pretty much every day but we didn’t know his name. There are loads of cats in the area and we know most of their names but didn’t know this cat’s name, so I asked!”

Learning to know her neighbors

Like many people, Cosgrove didn’t even know her neighbors before all of this happened. But now, she’s had the chance to connect with them in a new way. Maybe when all of this is over, she’ll end up with some new friends.

This is a great chance to reach out

Just because we all have to socially distance ourselves doesn’t mean we can’t connect with others. Something as simple as seeing an adorable kitty is a great reason to reach out to neighbors. Give them a call, contact them online, or just use a sign on your window like this lady did.

We can all connect with others if we just put in a little bit of effort.
