Hank once had a family. But they left abandoned him in the woods.

They left him there with a broken leg, an unopened bag of food he couldn’t open, his bed, and some old toys.

A Good Samaritan found him sitting perfectly still on his dog bed in the woods and called the local animal shelter.

“Only a puppy at 8 months old yet has been through so much. His tail started wagging once he knew he was being taken into the veterinary hospital. We cannot imagine why anyone would dump him with a broken leg. Left him with his bed, toys and food in the woods. Whoever you are please know that Hank is now safe and will never ever be hurt again,” Humans and Animals United wrote on their Facebook page.

Those who rescued Hank were afraid that he might be aggressive since he was in survival mode, but he was just a big sweetie pie.

“He was nothing but love from the moment they got him,” Rosa Fond, founder of Humans and Animals United, told The Dodo. “Everybody says that he’s the sweetest dog.”

Hank was immediately brought to the vet, where he was diagnosed with a broken leg that he had been suffering from for more than two weeks.

That’s why he didn’t move from his dog bed.

It was too painful for him to so do. Hank needed major surgery. He was almost euthanized, according to Facebook posts.

However, Humans and Animals United stepped in to make sure that Hank got all the critical care that he needed.

Hank was scheduled for surgery but needed to gain weight first.

No one knew exactly how long he had been without food, but he was very skinny when he was found. But it’s likely he had been abandoned in the woods for two weeks before he was found.

The veterinary hospital’s staff made sure to give him lots of love and attention during this time. Hank’s story got a lot of attention online.

Donations to help pay for Hank’s surgery and care started to pour in. People just couldn’t get over home someone could treat such a sweet dog with such cruelty.

Hank’s first surgery was a success, thanks to all those people who donated and were rooting for him.

He is expected to take a little while to recuperate.

Humans and Animals United also reported that he is still very skinny to the point where his bones stick out.

So, he is being fed small meals throughout the day to bulk up. He is in a temporary foster home but will soon be going into a different foster home that specializes in cases like Hank’s.

That way he’ll have the best chance to gain some weight and recover from surgery. Once Hank is healthy enough, he’ll be placed for adoption.

There has been a mass of inquiries about adopting Hank but an official forever home has yet to be selected.

“So thankful, for the good Samaritan that found him and everyone involved in his care. I know he will have a wonderful life from here on out,” the rescue wrote.
