Some puppies are naturally curious. Although curiosity is a good thing for their growth and development, it can easily lead them to trouble.

A boxer mastiff named Akela was able to escape from her home.

As she was exploring the outdoors, she almost got hit by a car. Although she was able to escape, she found herself in bigger trouble.

She got stuck in the nearby pond.

The poor pooch tried her best to swim ashore. Unfortunately, the water was too muddy. It prevented her from moving towards a safer spot.

Luckily, someone saw her avoiding the car and getting stuck in the muddy water.

The concerned resident quickly called for help. After a few minutes, the Washington Township Police Department arrived.

Akela almost never made it.

When the police officers arrived, she was desperately treading water. She was struggling to keep her head above the muddy water. The officers knew they needed to act fast if they want to save the poor dog. Acting late can easily leave Akela lifeless.

Officer John Kuligowski managed to find a kayak.

With it, he started his rescue mission. He carefully paddled his way towards Akela. Once he reached the poor dog’s spot, he tried hard to position the kayak so he could pull to the dog to safety. He found it hard to get her aboard so he decided to guide her to shore instead.

Officer John wasn’t alone in the rescue mission.

Officer Dallas Overko and Chief Thomas Cicerelle were there to help him. Their teamwork made it possible to get Akela back to shore.

Once the dog was on solid ground, they checked if she suffered any injuries.

Fortunately, she was perfectly fine. In fact, she looked happy to be able to get her paws on land.

The department shared:

“Akela was in high spirits after her ordeal and even posed for a few quick pictures before being turned over to Animal Control Solutions.”

The rescue mission was caught on camera.

The department uploaded it on their Facebook page and it has been viewed over 11,000 times. The people who have seen it have nothing but praises for the brave police officers. They tried their best to make sure the dog gets out of the water unharmed.

One of them said:

“What a beautiful dog; thank you Washington Township Police for rescuing him. I hope he gets a wonderful forever home!”

Another one reacted:

“Poor girl was probably exhausted. Thank you so much for saving her. ❤”

Unfortunately, even after saving Akela, the police officers are still not able to find her family or her home.

The only thing that’s clear to them was the road she went to before she got stuck in the muddy water. In time, they hope to get the adorable dog reunited with her family.

For the moment, with the help of the Animal Control solutions, they are trying their best to keep the pooch happy and healthy. If no one steps up to get her, she may be put up for adoption.

Akela, like other pets, needs a family that will keep him safe and happy all the time. She deserves it.
