A police officer named Jason Smith was driving down a highway near Kansas City when he received a call about a three-month-old kitten trapped on the highway’s median. The person who called said the cat was hiding behind a toy glove that had been on the median for weeks. It seemed like she was using the glove to protect herself from the wind.

Smith drove down the highway, keeping an eye out for the kitten and the glove. He spotted the glove first, and he pulled over to the side of the road. When he got closer, he saw the kitten herself.

The kitten cried loudly when Smith approached her—she was clearly scared. As soon as Smith picked her up and put her in the car, she quieted down.

The little kitten climbed around the car, exploring the space. Then, she curled up in Smith’s lap. Smith pet her head, and the kitten started purring. Just like that, Smith’s heart melted. He and the kitten had already started to bond.

Smith drove the little kitten over to a local animal shelter to get checked out by a vet. As they were driving, the kitten continued exploring the car. She even accidentally turned on the siren, which made Smith crack up.

When they got to the shelter, Smith dropped off the kitten. She received treatment for some burns on her tail, and the vets also gave her plenty of food to help her gain weight.

Smith couldn’t stop thinking about the kitten. After three days, he called to see if anyone had claimed her. No one had, and so Smith headed to the shelter and adopted the kitten himself! He named the kitten Bella.

When Smith got home with Bella, he introduced her to her new furry siblings. Smith and his family already had two dogs and two cats. Smith was most excited to introduce Bella to his cat Jasper—Jasper’s brother had passed away a few months before, and he had missed having another cat around.

Bella was a sweet kitten, and she got along well with all her new siblings. She also got along well with Smith’s son Joshua—the two immediately bonded.

“Bella has been a great fit for our home ever since the rescue,” Joshua told The Dodo.

After Smith adopted Bella, he decided to go back and take the glove that Bella had been hiding behind. It was a great reminder of her incredible rescue!
