Love can blossom in the most surprising places and with the most surprising people — or animals! That’s just the case with two cats who happened to live across the street from each other. The cats are named Theo and Simon.

One day, Theo caught Simon’s eye as the pair both stood in their respective windows. Soon, sparks were flying between the cats.

Simon happens to be an orange tabby whose owner Mackenzie caught him staring intently through the window, unable to pull himself away from whatever was on the other side. When she stopped to see what had captured her cat’s attention and left him riveted, she couldn’t believe what she saw.

Her buddy Simon was fixated on a gorgeous and fluffy cat across the way.

Mackenzie was stunned at how enamored Simon was with the other feline. It brought a smile to her face and she just had to share it on Twitter.

“My cat Simon is in LOVE with my neighbor’s cat and waits all day for him. Will keep y’all updated.”

Mackenzie’s tweet went viral with people fawning over Simon’s devotion to this other cat, a stranger who hadn’t yet reciprocated any affection from afar. A dedicated Simon would stare at his buddy day after day and finally, MacKenzie decided to help him out.

She made a sign on a sheet of paper and affixed it to her window that read:

“What is your cat’s name? Love, Simon”

When Theo’s owner saw the sign, she was stunned. She helped Theo write a note back to Simon, intrigued about this other cat from the neighboring building.

“Hi Simon, I’m Theo. You’re my best friend.”

The owners felt they ought to let their cats take the relationship a step farther and have their windows open so they could communicate in a cat-like fashion. Then when Simon dressed up for his first birthday, he pranced around in front of his window to make sure Theo saw him all fancied up.

Mackenzie documented their blossoming relationship on Twitter and she was taken aback at how many people couldn’t get enough of their love story. She posted another sign on their window from Simon to Theo.

“Theo, we went viral on Twitter.”

Theo replied,

“Simon, we did it!”

Eventually, Theo’s owner helped him create his own Twitter account so that the buddies could communicate virally and not just with old-fashioned pen and paper.

Eventually, the owners decided the cats should meet face to face. No more window gazing or direct messages on Twitter for these two. Simon could hardly contain his excitement, Mackenzie shared on Twitter.

“1 hour! Waiting by the front door.”

In fact, Simon kept trying to peek through the blinds he was so thrilled at the thought of meeting his buddy in person.

Even though there was a bit of hesitation at first, their initial playdate went swimmingly, Mackenzie reported.

“Simon is following Theo around like a puppy … We think it went as well as it can with cats! Only a couple hisses, no fights, and lots of butt-sniffs.”

Twitter users were smitten with the two cats and their tender friendship. In fact, when another cat hopped up on the windowsill not far from Theo’s apartment, Simon just had to ask if it might be named Alvin, as in Simon, Alvin and Theodore from The Chipmunks.

We hope the cats’ moms keep sharing photos of the pair. They’re just the absolute cutest!
