It’s no secret that ill or senior rescue dogs are often overlooked by potential adopters in rescue centers. It breaks our hearts to think that these dogs could be living out their final days alone and afraid, without the love of someone to call their owner.
Chris and Mariesa Hughes of Clifton Park, New York, felt the same way- and they decided to do the most amazing thing to give hundreds of senior dogs the happy ending to life that they deserved.
The couple first formed the Mr. Mo Project after experiencing the panic and heartbreak of expensive veterinarian bills for their senior dog Mo.
Chris and Mariesa recognized that many senior dogs are abandoned or surrendered to shelters because their owners are unable to pay for their care, so with that in mind, they decided to form the Mr. Mo Project to ensure that the elderly dog population nationwide is cared for.
With the help of volunteers and fosters, the couple have saved over 600 senior and special needs dogs, and currently live with 21 rescue dogs of all different ages and breeds. Thanks to the donations from people all over the community, they have also spent over one million dollars on emergency and specialty vet care to get the dogs the treatment they deserve.
We think it’s pretty hard to say who’s living the dream more- Chris and Mariesa, or their dogs.
The couple dedicates their lives to making sure that the dogs have a comfortable and happy life with them, and go out of their way to make their days extra special. So when a snowstorm hit the couple’s house in Clifton Park, Chris immediately began thinking up ways that the dogs could have some fun outside- and decided to construct a snow maze!
“When you get 32” of snow over night, you make a maze!” Chris told his 240,000 Facebook fans.
Chris used his snowblower to construct the huge maze, which features many different curved paths through the snow. “The only reason I have a snowblower is to make a maze,” he joked.
Once the maze was complete, the fun could happen- and Chris made sure to capture the moment when the dogs first began to explore their maze on video.
In the adorable clip that was posted onto Facebook, you can see how each dog is navigating their way around their maze. Meatball, a bull terrier who was rescued as a stray from Ohio, even brought a tennis ball along with him to play with in the snow.
Meanwhile Mercury, a French bulldog born with a major congenital defect of his spine, decided to stay put on the steps, as he’s not the biggest fan of the snow. He still seemed to be having fun watching his brothers and sisters playing.
