Sarah Sleime is a volunteer at the Greater Charlotte SPCA who had quite the story. It all involved one poor pit bull who couldn’t stop herself from crying all day long.

Sarah was visiting a shelter in the area run by CMACC when she stumbled across the dog.

CMACC (Charlotte Mecklenburgh Animal Care & Control) maintains a few shelters in the vicinity and oversees a huge swath of area. While Sarah was waiting in a check-up room, she decided to walk up and down the kennels.

“I was waiting for them [the shelter workers] to health check a couple of the dogs we were considering pulling, and I was walking up and down the kennels, and I just saw this pit bull sitting there, and she was very humanlike — slumped over and very solemn,” Sleime told The Dodo. “So I bent over and started talking to her.”

It was clear that the pitty had recently had a litter.

Although the mama dog had clearly had a litter, there were no puppies around her. When Sarah started to talk to the sad dog, she literally started crying. As she spoke, water fell down the mama’s eyes and down onto her snout.

“It was the craziest phenomenon,” Sleime said.

The poor mom was tremendously sad and obese.

It’s not clearly understood if dogs cry as humans do, but it was quite the phenomenon anyways. After looking into her story, Sarah found out a bit more about her situation.

“[The shelter workers] believe she was confined and used as a breeding machine,” Sleime said. “She’s obviously had many, many litters.”

When she heard the story, Sarah knew that she wanted to help Cinnamon (her name at the time) out.

She took out her phone and posted a video on Facebook of the sad dog. Soon, it had over 700,000 views on the first day! People from all around the world were messaging her and asking if they could help in any way. It was astounding to see people respond.

Eventually, it was Sarah’s friend, Meghan Shelton, who decided to adopt the dog.

Shelton knew that Cinnamon would make the perfect addition to their family.

“I have a special place in my heart for pit bulls,” Shelton told The Dodo. “I think they’re a very misunderstood dog and a misunderstood breed. And when I saw her in that video, literally crying in a cage, I cried. My kids cried. I showed my husband, and he said we could go look at her tomorrow.”

Despite there being multiple families in line to see her, the Sheltons were first! As soon as they met her, they knew it was love.

“She was super sweet, they had brought her into a room to meet with us, and we just let her relax. My kids were on the floor with her, and she sat on their laps and knocked them over with kisses.”

They changed her name to Rosie, got her spayed, and took her home the next day! She even got along perfectly with the there dog they already had at home, Blu. Rosie now gets all the love she could ever want.
