German Shepherds are not only wonderful pets, but their intelligence and curiosity make them highly trainable. That’s why they’re so popular as military working dogs and law enforcement K9 units. Needless to say, these animals can smell trouble.

And while they can be a little territorial (and defensive of their families), making it hard for strangers to make the best first impression, GSDs are smart enough to know what to investigate and who to seek out in many situations.

Cute and confused

One German Shepherd is making people all over the Internet laugh with its hilarious reaction to an unexpected situation.

While we don’t know anything else about the context, a video appeared on The Pet Collective’s YouTube page in 2018, garnering over 1.4 million views since then. It shows an adorable black German Shepherd responding to the sound of a baby crying. The caption refers to the dog as “he,” so we will too (skipping any thorough investigation).

Things start off with three dogs playing. But motion stops when mom decides to watch a video on her phone of a crying baby with the volume up. This is clearly a new sound to the German Shepherd.

With his ball in his mouth, he stares intently at mom (we’re not sure who’s filming if she’s watching a video on her phone). And we mean INTENTLY.

When German Shepherds are trying to figure something out (like why mom would want to listen to such a horrible noise), they tilt their heads to express curiosity. And this guy has a world-class tilt going on.

Round 2: He can’t even

Perhaps the best moment is when the baby cries again and the dog’s reaction is to be so entirely stunned that he actually lets the ball slide out of his mouth.

That’s like the dog equivalent of picking your jaw up off the floor.

Then he just stands there, dumbfounded.

Mind you, none of the other dogs care. They just stand there.

But the German Shepherd eventually approaches mom, giving her a lot that says: “why are you doing this and how can I make it stop?”

The investigation

After approaching mom, the dog’s investigation turns up no evidence of foul play…or of babies.

As mom laughs, his expression changes to one of deep disappointment that she has decided to play such a cruel trick on him.

Talk about betrayal! (Though, as you can see, the other dog in the background cares less than nothing about the distress cry and just wants to go back to playing.)

Unable to control himself around the sound of the squeal, he backs up and looks at her again – making sure she’s really serious about this kind of torture.

Make it stop

Seeming to almost immediately forget that he had just heard the sound seconds before, the dog appears to go back to playing only to be stumped by the sound again.

And that’s when he gives his most serious head tilt.

Mom better explain this.

Alas, she does not. She just gets a good laugh out of her adorable dog’s reaction as he comes towards her again to make sure things are ok and hopefully convince her never to bring home a real baby.
